Devane's (6'5") B#$&S#*& forearm driving Corey Tropp's (6'0")helmut less head through the ice was the catalyst - Kessel is not a choir boy and was chirping at Tropp after he scored, as was Devane - Kessel can handle himself or does he get a pass because he is an above average player? Devane a skill player? 4th liner? Devane's recklessness and playing MMA on Tropp was what started all of this. I could care less if Devane pummels Tropp in a fight, but slamming his head into the ice was wrong. Shanahan should review that.

My own thoughts on the brawl tonight:

1. Kessel shouldn't have used his stick, should have just laughed at him and skated away. His teammates will be there no matter what and I bet Clarkson hops off the bench regardless if Phil uses his stick. They know who to protect in Kessel, Kadri, Gardiner, etc.

2. How (frank)ing awesome is it to see how much our team hates Buffalo? I know it didn't really matter, but Bernier gritting his teeth and swinging as hard as he could showed me how much he likes the Leafs. Guys got some heart.

3. Kessel held his own against the guy who was his size.

I feel sort of bad for Reimer. The kid has worked his ass off trying to earn his spot and Bernier just won more love from the fans (and probably teammates) in one game than Reimer's been able to his whole time here.

Carlyle didn't want the situation to escalate so instead of putting out a goon (only one they had dressed tonight was in the box) he put out skill. There is a code fighters live by in the NHL and that wasn't followed tonight. There was zero reason for that goof to do what he did. None.

Their stats are pretty similar if you look at a per game basis.. Why are we arguing this? Why does every discussion end up being "Your random player sucks more than our random player!"? Vanek's good, Kessel's good.

According to one source Kessel had 20 pounds on Flynn but I don't know the accuracy of hockeydb

Not sure which slash (or spear) it was, but the 10 minute match penalty is only assessed when there is an intent to injure. And a review by the league is automatic.
