They can generally use meds to help for an a period of time but eventually the muscle in the heart will weaken from over working it self and in the end the best thing for the person is a new heart. But people are different and I have no knowledge of her situation so time frame is completely up in the air.

That's a good attitude to start with. I think you'll quickly learn how much drinking is ingrained into North American and Western culture in general. Case in point, a quote from one of my favourite comedians:
