A lot of the nasayers who're calling Holmgren the worst GM in the league are gonna eat their words in a very short amount of time!!!
- LeftCoaster

Nah as soon as they start playin good all of the praise will be put on someone else. Homer will never receive the appreciation he deserves from around the league.

"Because he's the hero Gotham deserves, but not the one it needs right now...and so we'll hunt him, because he can take it. Because he's not a hero. He's a silent guardian, a watchful protector...a dark knight."

I think it's a fair contract, and a good job by Holmer. I dont think this is such a steal of a deal that many think it is. But thats just my opinion.

I personally feel read is worth north of $4 mil, so I'm pretty happy about it. It's more his entire tenure as Flyers GM that makes me think he's under-appreciated league-wide.

I think it's fair because he is neither overpaid, or underpaid. I view it as a steal, because as a pending UFA, he could've tested Free Agency, and used the market to leverage more from the Flyers or another team. And I don't think you would get him for what he signed for in that situation. So in that manner, it's definitely a steal. A player of Read's caliber at his age, would cost you more in Free Agency.

The players and coach are at fault for the Flyers defensive shortcomings.

The coach failed to make effective or timely adjustments. The players did a piss poor job of playing smart defense.

There was a lot of wasted effort on failed puck movement, bad outlet passing led to a lot of running around, and wasted energy in trying to back check needlessly. When the adjustments were made late in the year, to a shorter and more controlled transition game, both the team's offense and defense improved.

That's not disputable.

At the same time to suggest the players played well in a bad system is ridiculous, too.

And let's not post pictures of Laviolette with the Cup...he went to the post season one (frank)ing time as the Canes coach...Scotty Bowman he ain't.

There is no question that individual player mistakes were made. That's always going to be the case. As an example, we had a discussion in the recent past on Giroux's shortcoming defensively. But it all has to start with the Coach. He needs to give the players a sound structure and system of play, that they're capable of executing as a team. And I think Laviolette failed to do that last Season. And the individual player mistakes compounded that. But take away those individual mistakes, and correct them. The Flyers style of play that Laviolette wants them to play, is still flawed in my opinion. Which is made even worse by not having the correct personnel to play it.

I've seen enough projections that have the Flyers outside, I just want the season to start so we can get the naysayers to shut it already.

LOL, nothing supports an argument like providing a quote from Mike Milbury.
- Tomahawk

There are fair points on both sides of this fence regarding whether it's the lack of adjustments to the system or the lack of players stepping up that's the major factor in the team's defensive shortcomings.

That said, whichever side of the debate I'd decide to take a stand on, I'd agree that I would never, never want to cite Mike Milbury as a supporting voice to my argument.

I would, when the comment made was incredibly accurate, and summed up one of the major problems with the team. Whether you like or don't like, respect or don't respect Milbury. He was 100% correct. And that's all that matters. And that Milbury isn't exactly a Hockey genius is really part of the point. But maybe you missed that. But yet he knew it. And that reckless aggressiveness went on and on. Game after game, after game. So regardless of whether you think it's the players or the Coach, the responsibility still falls on the Coach to correct it.
