I do not understand why the Leafs won't give Franson the 1 year deal he wants if it's for the rumored 2.5M. The leafs PP will be even more awful without him. From the info I gathered it seems he wants 3M for 2 years or 2.5m for 1 year. Leafs seem to be offering 2.5M for 2 years or 2M for 1 year.

well, they say because they have too many guys to sign next year.. to me it's because they realize he will not be part of the team much longer... they want him for 2yrs, because then he is a trade-able asset... on a 1yr, he's a giveaway.

He is currently their second best defenseman and their best shooting defenseman. Even if he signs a 1 yr deal he will still be an RFA at the end of the season and will still own his rights. They better be focusing all of their time on signing Kessel right now if they aren't figuring things out with Franson.

you would think.... personally i think they should be trying to sign him to a 4yr deal... because based on their depth, i see him as the odd man out in 1.5yrs, and having him signed to a reasonable contract and trying to trade him in 2yrs would avoid having to give him away, like they'll have to do after next year.

I think that seems to be the case. Just by watching his interviews he looks like he is going to want to see his options and pick the city he wants to be in the most. I would explore the option of trading him but only if it's a 1 for 1 trade for another established young star in the league.

Clarkson is a 29 yr old 2nd/3rd line forward that was rewarded 5.25M annually and was the most sought after free agent this summer with the salary cap taking a significant hit.

Kessel, who is just entering his prime and is a legitimate top line scoring forward, will be the most sought after free agent with the salary cap significantly rising. He will be having big $$$ thrown his way...

They don't want to do a 1 year with franson for numerous reasons. 1 they don't want to give him the arbitration rights he passed on this summer, and 2 they already have like 4 dmen that have expiring contract this summer, don't want to make it 5.
