Winter Classic is about marquee teams (Detroit, Toronto, NYR, Boston, Chi) or megawatt star power (Wash, Pitts). there are a lot of teams that just don't bring enough interest to warrant a presence in such an event. - scotch_tape
Detroit is bankrupt. Who can afford the winter classic There are plenty of team that are capable of selling out a stadium outdoors.... |

Give me a break, this is getting so outplayed at this point. Just call it the Penguins Classic and just rotate between the Pens playing the Capitals and the Blackhawks |

Before believing the always-so-accurate Eklund, you might want to check an actual news outlet that states no opponent has been confirmed as of yet before crying crying crying about the Penguins. |

This....The NHL is a business, its purpose is to make money, not be fair. When Buffalo, CBJ ect....put together a product the market wants, then they will have a game. |

winter classic needs a full stadium - that's why the leafs are in this years version - we will fill a football stadium easily - even at inflated prices.
the Ice in washington is going to be nasty. |

For the Record Eklund hasn't been wrong about one of these yet. And the league never confirms them until May or June. |

Oh. Well then. Maybe the whole "watch Carolina" from last season's trade deadline had something to do with an outdoor game announcement then?
TSN is reporting this as well. They seem to think the opponent will be the Flyers. |

I don't get what is so great about the Winter Classic. The seats seem so far away from the ice and it looks like an exhibition game on tv. Plus it's like a five hour event that drags on and on, and the ice is so bad that players can't demonstrate the full extent of their speed and skill.
I guess it makes a lot of money, but if you're looking to sell the actual game of hockey, I think it's the wrong way to go.

As a Flyers fan, I am 100% not down with this. Give another team a shot there. |

Sorry? I don't make the schedule?
If I did, I would schedule the Pens/Flyers in Happy Valley. That would be awesome. |

I wasn't mad at you, just expressing my thoughts.
I've been to 2 Winter Classics. It's expensive, it's cold, it's a horrible view, and it takes way too long. I have no interest in going to another one.
That said, Flyers/Pens at Beaver Stadium would be worth it. |

A new NHL rule says fighters can't take off their helmets. It took two games for them to find the loophole: http://deadsp.in/CHxoOaK

Penguins already had 2 WC games. Give someone else a shot. Islander, Devils, Columbus. I thought Canada had thier own outdoor games. Heritage right? Quit stuffing the Penguins down our mouths. Give someone else a shot. |

NHL doesn't care about the gate receipts for the Winter Classic. they don't care about the host city's economics. they care about the ratings it gets on NBC. that's it. Edmonton and Minnesota could sell out a 60,000-seat stadium with ease. but no one is interested in watching those teams. - scotch_tape
Then the Leafs and Canadians should be getting more classics than the franking caps |
