I guess we can't know that, but if you want a GM that isn't timid to make a big move or admit when the org was wrong and move on, he's your guy.

One question I ask myself, if Homer is so bad, and the org is not solid overall, how come Vinny turned down offer from what seemed like half the league to come here.. I was shocked when he signed with us, and it really told me a lot about how the org is perceived.

Because people who rip Holmgren generally like to think they're smarter than the room, but in reality, the team Holmgren built consistently wins games. That's the only number the really counts.

That leaves the Flyers with $7,314,405 of Cap space for next Season. Needing to re-sign B Schenn, Timonen or a replacement, and both Goalies or replacements.

Not counting how much the Cap goes up.

Assuming BSchenn resigns for no more than $500k more than his current cap, Kimmo is gonna have to take a considerable slash on his salary next year. In such a big free agent year, I don't see how the Flyers won't be involved in talks for some of the biggest names.

B Schenn's Cap hit could even go down. I don't know if Timonen is coming back or not.

I'll get ripped for this, but at the time, I was all for the Bryz signing and thought it was a solid signing. I was wrong, so was Homer. Key is he did what was best for the org and bought him out because he wasn't getting enough value for what he was paying him. I can respect a guy who will do whatever it takes to ice a winner. See also the Weber offer sheet.

I'm on that same bus. It just didn't work out. They went out and got the best Goalie available in my opinion. Lot's of factors to why it didn't work out. Bottom line, is that for whatever reason, Bryzgalov didn't play well enough. I blame the player, not Holmgren.

Exactly. I liked Bryz...I still like Bryz, but it was clear that the level of play, plus the cap recapture penalties, made him staying the wrong choice.

Holmgren definitely has a set of brass balls and won't shy away from making a big move he feels makes the team better

Agreed. I still like Bryz as well.. Homer made the correct choice..

I must say, I was very happy to see Emery back.. I watched him closely when he started his comeback with Anaheim.. I think he'll do well..

I'm sure they will be over the regular season cap number in the offseason again, even if it goes back up $70 million, but they will get down just below it when they have to and then put Pronger on LTIR again.

But Mezaros and Kimmo will have to be replaced with much cheaper defensemen.

If he did choose to return, what would be your realistic cap hit, assuming he has a pretty good year and ends the season healthy?

Exactly.

I hate that whole idea of how Homer and the organization blew it with Bryz. Come on man.

Go back to that offseason. Who would you rather have? Did ANYONE here want to stick with that cluster(frank) of a goalie situation? No. Yeah maybe we had Bob, but he was still raw and Bryz was simply the better option of the 2. So Homer- at the discretion of Snider in my opinion is next to irrelevant- went out and tried to ice a better hockey team.

We all believed that he did. Bryz, at the time, should have been clearly viewed as an upgrade over both Bob and Leighton/Boosh/etc. Homer went out, traded for the rights of the best impending free agent goalie on the market (hell probably the best FA goalie in the last handful of years) and signed him for a fair price.

At that point, Holmgren's job is both fulfilled and- here's the important one- FINISHED. There's nothing more Homer can do at this point. He's not holding the controller. This is the point where the player that he signed needs to play at a level that his payroll justifies.

And that simply did not happen.

Homer is not to blame. Not even in the slightest. How the hell was he supposed to know if Bryz was going to play at a 2nd tier goaltending level? If Holmgren could see in the future and know that Bryz was going to be subpar for the next few seasons, he wouldn't have signed him.

Well, Meszaros is basically a spare part, so replacing him for less should be a piece of cake. But they're not replacing Kimmo for less.

I think the Read signing speaks to two things: 1) players understand the cap world. and 2)I think players REALLY like playing for this organization.

Say what you want, but the way this franchise retains players after their careers and the way the players stay in the area (for the most part) really speaks to the way the Flyers run things...especially for those who buy in to the franchise mentality.
