ok, now that the contract stuff is somewhat clear. What is ROR worth?

as of now, not the 6.5 he's making. But if he leads the team this year in points and they make the playoffs, will he hold firm and demand he be paid 6.5per.

IF they make the playoffs and he's the leading point getter on this team, then i say give him the money, they have the cap space.

I say he is worth around 5.5 on a long term contract, when you have the Duchene making 6 and Landy making 5.5 next season, matching that would be a fair when you consider his position on the team.

A 6 year, 32 million contract would be pricey, but if he shows he can be steller on Duchenes wing, I think its worth it

I don't think we can accurately discuss that right now, I'd like to see him play a few games at wing and draw some comparisons to other LW...we know ROR will not sign for less that what he (or his dad) feels he is worth, so I say we wait until March 4 to put a number on it.

To answer your question though I'd say this. My gut right now tells me that 5yr x 5mil is actually a good starting point though. If he puts up a ppg pace prior to March 4 then I go 5x6, if he is squarely average then something like 4x4.5. If he doesn't bit on either of those I cut bait and trade him

whatever he signs for, if he stays with the Avs, it cant be more than Duchene or Landy, at the highest he matches landys 5.5

I agree, it would take 35 G/200 shots/200 hits/ and about 82 pts to get more than Duchene

I think 6.5 is a manditory for next season, to retain his RFA rights he needs to recieve that base salary. This is from an article breaking it down the situation.

"the Avalanche could file for ‘cut-down’ arbitration in the hopes that they can retain O'Reilly at a lower price than his $6.5 million 2013-14 salary. 'Cut-down' arbitration is a rarely-used CBA provision that allows teams to file for arbitration with the hopes of giving their player a pay cut of up to 15%.So the lowest possible salary he could get at arbitration would be $5.525 million"

Its a very messy contract situation, too many parts moving to figure it out.

But I have no idea what happens to all that if we sign him to an extension that takes him to UFA status...we need to hire a laywer to figure this out for us

No way Colorado would win that arbitration case. The fact they had to match the offer sheet proves there is at least one other team willing to pay O'Reilly 6.5 mil a year. They could have walked away from the offer sheet last year but chose not to. I don't even see how you could argue to an arbitrator that he should get less.

same article mentioned that Canucks used that on Mason Raymond, and they won, he had his salary rolled back 14%, so it does happen.

But yes I agree, no way they win that case, so it seems that their only option is to pay him the 6.5m next season for sure and structure a contract that becomes more cap friendly as they go along

RoR can sign at any time for a lower price. If he can produce as a top line winger with Duchene then he would be worth 5 mil. If he refuses that contract however, even with how important he is to this team, I think Sakic and Roy have no issue trading him.

And as far as our rookie Dmen, don't assume they will all turn out into studs. I think Bigras will be part of this team for years to come and I think Barrie could be quite good but Elliot is still up in the air right now. Also because of the other 2, that would place Elliot on the bottom pairing which I am not sure is the best fit.

Hopefully O'Reilly just plays well enough to where they have no issue giving him 6.5 because right now he's holding all the cards at the negotiating table.
