RNH PPG in first two seasons: 0.75
Eberle PPG in first two seasons: 0.80
Hall PPG in first two seasons: 0.75

- MaximumBone

yes I'm well aware he racked up assists while Hall and Eberle scored a (frank) ton of goals.

forgive me if I don't see that as the same thing

Hall and Eberle only played 120ish and 140ish respectively and produced at the same offensive pace as Nuge and yet their contracts weren't nearly as controversial. RNH also developed a strong defensive acumen in his sophomore season so he arguably brings more to table than Eberle.

Obviously there are risks involved with this contract, but the reward heavily outweighs any such risk in my mind.

- MaximumBone

Dont even bother trying to defend it to the haters.
Waste of time.

You know, as do i, why they did it. We also both know the massive potential rnh has and how huge a true star #1 center will be for us.

His size isnt an issue going forward which hes proven while putting up fantastic numbers as a skinny 18 year old. and worst case we may be overpaying marginally for a year or 2, but have a fantastic contract for 4-5 of those seven years

It literally isn't. Tavares makes LESS than RNH. Ridiculous.
- iknowbest

500K less. It was an extension secnd year of their ELC..same PPG, 1st overalls, etc, etc.

It's the same contract.

I was at the game last night and as an Isles fan, had an interest in paying attention to Joensuu. I thought he played reasonably well for a bottom six forward. I would laugh at the use of "terrific" to describe his play. He's slow, missed a lot of hits due to lack of footspeed but was trying and managed to score.

Sadly, that's his ceiling for you and it won't happen often.

He's a bottom six and not a great one, don't expect much. If that was terrific for you then your expectations are much lower than mine, or we have a different definition of the word.

***oh, and JT's contract is still the best value in the entire league.

RNH making more after 102 games? Uhhh, no

- Isles_since_6

He doesnt make more because he knows what money his team has to spend, its not secret you guys were on the verge of folding if the lockout didnt happened, and why the cap is not going to go up by much next year, because their are 6 teams in the league feeling the heat for money problems. I respect JT for taking a little hit so the team can spend more on the team.

This is the problem that Tambo setup for us. It would've been one thing to lock Hall up that early, but giving eberle and early contract is screwing us going forward. Can't give Eberle the money and not RNH/Yak. Probably could get away giving Hall the money and then making everyone else a bit less, but that isn't an option anymore.

34 goals, PPG as a sophomore?

really?

I love the trolling by other teams' fans. It's a pretty fair contract, granted they are obviously banking on him continuing his development, as he should, and not regressing like a Daigle. And, if he hits anywhere near his potential, 6 mil/yr is going to be a ridiculous steal. Much like the Landeskog deal.
- Blackstrom2

no, actually what it means is that he actually lived up to the contract.

He can either horribly disappoint or live up to his contract

It's one thing to be small, another to be injury prone.
Henrik is second amongst current NHL players when it comes to the Iron man streak, with the exception of Daniel's head-shot from Keith he was decent in terms of health consistency.

The Nuge on the other hand as already demonstrated his inability to stay healthy in a meager 102 game stint. Furthermore the Sedin's don't utilize a speed game in the same manner has Nuge does, thus in the playoffs, when things get nasty i'd assume things would get worse for the Nuge as opposed to better (regular season).

- Whiskey-Tango

I think you're overrating the intensity and toughness of playoffs. You're also miscasting RNH as someone whose game relies on speed. He's much closer to the Sedins in utilizing his vision and smarts on the ice rather than speed.

So better to lowball, so he signs a 2 year deal to get him through to UFA with him knowing he will be worth $7 + to the rest of the league come UFA eligibility
- JasonHarrison

2 years gets him to 22 years old. It's unlikely that whatever contract they gave him then would be regarded as bad especially if he played up to his potential.

It's the same thing as the RNH contract.

it's less, and he's significantly better than RNH.

So 5.5 mil/yr is the best deal in the game if he scores 90 points, but if RNH scores 90 points, it's only living up to his contract?

A very talented young player, he'll be a great #1 center for the Oilers.
- LeftCoaster

As long as they get him a bionic shoulder...

In all seriousness they had no choice to give him the same as Ebs and Horse face.

Tavares: 6 years, $33 million
RNH: 7 years, $42 million

I could be reading that wrong, but those look like different numbers to me. Add to the fact that Tavares is a much better player than RNH and the Tavares deal is probably the best contract in the NHL.

The question is he significantly better than JT was after his second year? Keep in mind, RNH has shoulder problems...yet they still put up the same PPG.

The one-for-all, all-for-one mantra of the young Oilers is apparent both on and off the ice with Nugent-Hopkins’ deal. Plus, it makes the negotiations very easy once extension talks begin for both Nail Yakupov and Justin Schultz. I’m not saying that either player will be worth a $6 million annual salary when that time comes, but the Oilers are guaranteed that they won’t have to pay either player any more than the $6 million being made by Hall, Eberle and RNH. It’s a genius move, saving the team dollars in the long run while preventing any messy contract negotiations.
- Ryan Garner

I think Yakupov will definitely get 6 million per year... I don't think Schultz will though. Not yet anyway.

A 500K difference, but everything else about the contract, is literally the same. 2 years into ELC, 1st overalls, same .75 PPG. I already typed this, don't selectively read.

Yes because it shows we are willing to give anyone with one good season a long-term extension. We should've waited until x-mas.

Are you just trying to look like an bumhole? Are you saying that you don't think RNH has the potential to be an elite player? Well, that's where we differ, I guess.
