He has also proved that he is a health risk within that extremely small sample size, lord knows the kid has talent, and will undoubtedly be a point per game player. If he is unable to bulk up and stay healthy then that 6 mill, 7 year contract could indeed hurt the franchise if he's only able to play 50-60 games a season.

Time will tell, still don't understand why management didn't wait to see how he has recovered from this latest injury, the guys a RFA, its not like he was going anywhere at the end of this season.

Of all the players making 6 mil or more this year, there are only three which have never played in a playoff game... one of them is a goalie... bet you can't guess the other 2!

Just when i think u cant come up with a dumber point. U prove me wrong.

Ebs and hall have never made 6 mil before this coming season.

So you can't even man up and say which team you support the most? I am an NHL fan as well but the Oilers are my team since I was 4 years old. I enjoy watching almost all the other teams play, depending on the match up, but if any one is playing the Oilers, I hope the Oil wins. Everytime.

has RNH done enough to deserve this contract? no. but deserve has nothing to do with it (Clint Eastwood).

the Oil are paying for the prime years of a 1st overall C.

naysayers have to get out of the 90s, when players won the lottery at age 30, after they prime producing years. rarely, if ever, did teams actual receive fair value for these contracts.

they are locking up their first line C for his entire prime. that's how it works now, whether you like it or not. you pay, not for what they have done, but for their prime years.

is there risk? sure. but, how many 1st overall Cs have busted? the best 18 year old in the world almost always becomes one of the best players in the world, and that is especially true when he is a C.

besides, David Clarkson got 35 mil x 7. what are the chances that RNH won't be at least 1mil/year better than Clarkson?

Mike Richards Richard in his mouth?

And he has made over 6 mil in 2011, 2012, 2013 and will in 2014-2018 and due to the back loading of the contract his cap hit doesn't go over 6 mil.

Alcatraz would seem like SJ wouldn't it?
- golfingsince

It would seem that way. LA could be a possibility as well but the Hawks won this year, so I have no idea which bandwagon he or she is on this year.

The risk in that was that he may even demand 6.5-7 million per if he signed a 2/3 year deal and put up 65+ points per season. Because at that point he would be proven as a top line center and the cap will be significantly higher. On the other hand, he could continue to struggle to stay healthy and not live up to the contract during the next couple of years and it could end up backfiring for the Oilers. Risky move for Mac T, but it's clear that he did it to potentially save that extra cap room down the road when the cap goes up and so does the average salary.

based on the conference interview, a couple factors mac-t based on giving out the contract is cap going up and also the history of such shoulder injuries heal well and players return to play in good condition. mac-t will not rush nuge back into the line-up whatsoever.
