What have you shown that proves Tavares is superior? That his PPG totals over those years were inferior to the Oilers players? That his plus/minus is lacking? That he has more points because the Oilers guys missed games due to a shortened season and some injuries? I'll give you the injury thing, but that's all you're getting... Nothing else you mentioned suggests that Tavares is a better player... NOTHING. Using your logic, Tavares is better than Crosby.

First time poster here. I am stoked about this deal, and it is a great investment for the future. Nuge is already a #1 center, so i don't see how anyone could hate the deal.

I love how people bring up Tavares. The guy has one of the best contracts in the league, and this is the standard that you are going to use to compare? Lets take the complete outlier of all contracts and use that to base our opinion of this new contract.

RNH was our #1 center last year, and faced the toughest competition of any Oiler forward. This almost never happens for a player so young, but he did just fine posting a massively positive Corsi rel, and was excellent defensively all season. His offense suffered a bit because of it, but i think it was a great year for overall development. With an extra 5-10 lbs that he has apparently added, and a fixed shoulder, i expect this contract to be a steal as early as 2015.

So I guess this means Yakupov is gone.

Ok, so you give him $6M as well (seems to be the going rate for first overall picks in Edmonton) and now you have 4 forwards taking up $24M in cap space. You also have to pay 9 more forwards, 7 defensemen, and 2 goalies. Money is going to get very tight.

We will be a cap team for sure, but fortunately we have a few bargain contracts.

Ummmmm RNH is a stud and imo will end up being the best out of all of them. He has Sedin like vision but with a better shot and skill.

I think it was a good deal, but only the future will dictate whether that is true or not. Some people think it was horrible, which is fine, but those people should realize that this deal is very similar to what other young guys around the league are getting... This is not something that is unique in any shape or form... This is not something that only the Oilers are doing.

As far as Tavares goes, I see no (or very little difference) between what he has done vs. what Hall, RNH, Yakupov (relative to year played). Until he blows those guys out of the water, he will not be deserving of the attention that he is currently receiving. Until then, I will view him as overrated -- Do not mistake "overrated" as a knock on his play... He is a great player... Just an overrated one.

Yeah, it's a lot of money and term, probably too much, but signing a UFA and a RFA aren't the same thing at all.
