Blacker did not deserve to be sent down, was much better than Rielly thus far, this is a case of a player getting preferential treatment because of the media hype, draft position and not deserving it with his well below average play on the ice, meh...Idiots.
- LeafMan

Blacker wasn't anything special either. So Rielly gets more ice time.

To chime in on Blacker, the back end is too congested. All the coaching staff is truly looking for is a 7th defender if needed.

With Liles/Fraser/Gunnerson/Franson not necessarily long term Leafs (Not saying it's one or the other), they probably will let some of their guys stay on a competitive Marlies team and come into a camp with open spots and see some truly good players in the wings.

MacWilliam in my opinion is a better looking option as the 7th than Blacker for two reasons;

1) Yes, he is better defensively than Blacker. Blacker is definitely a solid depth Defenseman right now, and will likely be a first call up with injuries pending. But MacWilliam has that grit to him the team want and hes solid on his feet.

2) He's truly a shutdown player. That's what his first instinct is; to defend. Whether or not he becomes anything more than a 7th, we don't know. But he fits the bill. And yes, it helps to be throwing High-Light reel worthy checks on players. The important part though is he throws the hits and either it stops plays at the Blue Line, or he gets back into position and has taken a guy out of the play.

He also recovers the puck well and for a big guy that can do that and has a decent first pass, it's totally worthwhile keeping him. And he's rather quick.

With all 3 enforcers benched for injury, it's likely Ashton - Colborne - Devane or some combination thereof. I like Devane better than Orr, and I think Ashton at some point could potentially replace a Kulemin if he's traded to make room for Franson. I think every Leafs fan would rather see Liles go, but he does have merits as a PMD with good defensive positioning.

With Orr, McLaren on injured reserve, I think that opens up just enough cap space to sign Franson to a contract like Kadri's for a year.
