Except there are rent controls in place while condo corps can raise fees as much as they want (arbitrarily decide the financial situation dictates) from year to year.

well, like I mean, they have advantages because the complete exterior of my home is cared for(windows/doors/roof/siding etc)...plus snow removal, water included, grass cutting....but I can and dont mind doing all that stuff and theres no way Ive had $11,550(275 x 3.5 years) of services done to my house since moving in!

there is a lot more to it. looking at the possibility of taking over ownership of the cheese shop sooner than we expected. so we want to make that transition first. our intention was to buy when we left the place we are at but its grown stale on us.. and the building is lower middle class as well.

so we want to live in an upper middle class environment with in unit laundry, dishwasher etc but because of the situation that has presented itself recently we decided it might be best to see if we need to buy out the business first and then use that as collateral against a house.

also, as first time house buyers i can use my RRSPS against the mortgage as well. so our thinking is that between the business and my RRSPs we should be able to jump the starter home step.

With interest rates set to rise, house prices are going to come down Bruce. Get a down payment together. We're debating selling our place (bought for 240k in 07, sell for 400k now), put the money aside and rent and wait for the inevitable fallout........my only worry is it's always a risk when you jump out of the home ownership market. Hopefully you got a down payment ready for when house prices do fall.

with our current place, my wife wants to keep it as a second rental unit but if we did that we would have to take out equity from the house for the next house given we had a larger downpaymnt, and we'd likely rent from $1000-1200/month + utilities...problem is, $275 goes to condo fees....so....
