I've seen lots of speculation of Coburn/Streit too

I don't know and I bet Lavi is going to try several different combos to see what works.

I'll say this, I'm glad Kimmo is back even if he is a bit slower.
He makes nearly everyone he plays with better.

- Marc D

Coburn/Streit makes sense as a pairing, but that make Streit getting top-4 5-on-5 minutes, and having to play against top-6 players. Ideally, you'd want to limit that. But yeah, there's doesn't seem to be a perfect fit on paper.

I was shocked and a bit tongue tied that I got to hang out with Bob Hound Kelly.
He was a boyhood favorite.

Yeah, me too.
Gus needs a strong shut down defenseman and a vet to settle him... Grossmann on paper seems ideal for that.
Timmonen can continue to develop Schenn. They have always been good together.
Which leaves Coburn, who really needs a strong comeback year this year. Which is why I hesitate when I think of this tandem.
Mez and Streit? Both offensive D, so probably not.
Does Timmonen have the speed left to bail Streit out if he over commits? Prolly not. Schenn? He's also often getting out of position for that big hit (though this is getting better).
Until I actually see some of the pairings I don't think there is a good answer on paper. They are all about the same. Some good points, some bad ones.

- FlyersGrace

If they let me vote I'd go Grossman.

I got jalapeno juice from my fingers around my eyes. I'm tearing like a chick watching the Hallmark channel.

I think if Mez could stay healthy he might fit. You'd have one all around good solid pair (Schenn / Timmonen), one shutdown pair for top lines (Coburn / Grossmann), and one offensive pair Streit / Mez. And yes you could flip Mez and Gus, but based on pre-season play I think Mez has been stronger. Just sayin...

No but Julie and Ek in his mask (what a goof) and even Lauren Hart were there.

It was a pretty fun night, even if the Flyers lost to Tampa.
It was the first game for Matt Carle as a Flyer IIRC.

Honestly, I'd like to see some points on how Coburn ISN'T the perfect line mate for Streit.

I think they'll do some mixing and matching. I think they'll likely play Coburn and Grossmann together a lot on the PK, and late in games when they have a lead. And situations like that.

Yeah, he brought his kids and his dog and let Crims play mini stick hockey with them. I started questioning his decision making on the spot.

- JAKEw1234

Coburns' speed is a definite plus, if Streit gets caught in the offensive side, Coburn can likely get back quicker to cover.

The downside is Coburn is a workhorse, big minute eater for this team.
Do you want Streit out there all those minutes against the other team's top lines all the time?

Well for one Coburn's confidence is shaken from last season. If Streit leaves him too often to get burned it's only going to shake him more.
I do think they should try it. See if Coburn can't get back into his groove with a strong outlet passer and more offensive partner so he can go back to playing shut down only.
Second reason would be fan whipping boy... Streit or Coburn will probably fall there, could you imagine if they were on a pair together? Listening to the whining on HB would be a headache but listening to the "analysts" on TV would just make me mad.
It has the potential to be a good pair... And it has the potential to bite, hard. Which is why I want to see it in pre-season.

Lukin was dissing Heiniken so I started drinking his Yuenglings. After my second bottle he was giving me the stink eye.

Kimmo/Schenn will be taking other team's top lines most of the time, I think. I'd be fine with seeing a Streit/Coburn pair play a lot of minutes against 2nd/3rd lines. I'd also be fine with Streit getting 20+ minutes a night. While I think the accusations against his defense hold some truth, I think they've also been overstated and exaggerated at this point. He was looking good to me in both ends last night.

I dunno, I saw a couple of nice flubs from Streit last night. One really nice one where he battled it back from his own screw up... Which I appreciate. He didn't just give up.

I think a problem is, he became the scapegoat in NY. When he left they signed it off as him being horrible and old and slow. The truth is, he's a good offensive Dman who brings a lot of experience, leadership, smooth play, and decent (not bad as NYI fans would have you believe) D.

I'll give ya that. I think played in more reasonable match ups and in a more offensive way he'll do fine. I just am expecting him to screw up sometimes...
