Okay. So, you think Laughton looks awful. In your expert opinion, what should the Flyers plans be for him going forward, this year and beyond?
- jmatchett383

Well, IMO if someone out-plays him prior to the season, then he needs 1 more year in juniors.

He has looked very good. I still think Laughton's overall game is superior to his, but Cousins has looked better than advertised for sure.
- jmatchett383

Agreed for sure. The ceiling is potentially higher with Laughton and his game is perceived as more complete and defensive, but Cousins hasn't looked anything at all on how the scouts and reports made him sound. He was one of the best players on the ice in London and Toronto.

Also, not gonna lie, Mesz has looked quite good - like the old Mesz we once knew!

He wanted to trade Laughton for Iginla last year at the trade deadline.

I think the questions about Akeson and Cousins are their size and defensive ability. Just about everyone agrees that they have the offensive talent to play in the NHL.

If they really are NHL players, they should tear up the AHL if they get sent back down.

- PhillySportsGuy

For sure.

So he could show the flyers how to enjoy the offseason?

You're going to get me in more trouble with MJL

Just don't say the Flyers have a Cap problem.

Really?

Wow. I don't know if that's a good thing or not.

I thought he did a bunch of things last night that made me see why he was sought after, but I didn't come away thinking that he needed to make the team this year.

Morin is not making the team.

Absolutely. I don't think anyone on here, including MJL, has said that he should automatically get a spot. We've said that, if he EARNS a spot by being one of the best 12 players in camp/preseason, then he should make the team and, if not, he should be sent back down.

The argument I'm seeing is that he's getting way too much credit while being substandard based on an extremely small sample size, and I'm disagreeing.

It will take and act from "God" for him to make it, and that's NOTHING on his skill or showing so far, just a numbers game. Flyers have too many NHL, one-way contracts to work with.

He said the team needed more grit and a power forward. I'm not even kidding. No joke necessary.

I know. Keeping Morin would be so incredibly dumb on so many levels.

Morin's at least 2 years away, most likely 3, and I don't think we'll see his full potential for 5 or 6.

No, really. I'm serious. I want to know what you think the organization should do with Laughton going forwards for the next, let's say, 2 years.
- jmatchett383

I don't know -- that's my point. I keep saying it, because I don't know -- personally, I don't know what he's done to make everyone so damn sure he's ready to play in the NHL that he CAN'T go back to junior!

I only know what I've read about how he's perceived. But what if he gets totally outplayed in the preseason by McGinn, Cousins, Akeson and Raffl? What then? You can't just slap him on the team and say, "Good job, Defensively Responsible Youngster!"

I've never seen "it" in a game. I saw Scott Laughton look really strong in two junior games that I watched, but I also saw Nick Cousins play one junior game and get four points.

All I've said is that Laughton gets this massive benefit of the doubt because he's a first-round pick and is "defensively responsible."

No one here has seen Laughton do anything more than I have, yet, again, this belief exists on what he's going to do like few other players I've seen the Flyers have.

Morin's at least 2 years away if not more.

I think it's tough to say that. His play will dictate that. Though I hope they take their time with him.

Tim is a great scout if he can tell Morin is a top 6 dman already after watching him play 2 GAMES against AHL/NHL players.

Why haven't the Flyers hired someone like him with such a great mind.

It is easy to get excited about him after watching the game, but yeah, let's relax and watch him play a few games before jumping to conclusions here.

Oh, for God's sake -- all first-round picks have tools. Pavel Brendl had tools. Eric Chouinard had tools.

We'll see if Scott Laughton's tools that he's shown in his junior career mean a damn thing in the NHL -- I've simply watched enough games to be honest enough to say that I haven't seen Scott Laughton do anything well enough for me to know that he's going to make it.

I want him to make it, because he's a Flyer.

- AllInForFlyers

What you're doing is slowly moving your argument away from the original discussion. Now you're trying to make it about Laughton not being a guarantee on making it as an NHL player. Which nobody has objected to, or disagreed with.

Here is my take on Akeson.

He has above average NHL hands.
He has below average NHL skating ability.
He has below average NHL speed.
He has well below average NHL defensive ability.

Using the above criteria he would ONLY be useful in a top 6 role, and then would have to score at a pretty healthy pace to maintain that role. He cant be used in a bottom six role without severely hampering the team defensively. Couple that with being undrafted, and the team having multiple better options to fill the same roles, I doubt he even makes the team.

Is it unfair that Laughton has a leg up because of his draft position? Maybe.
