Hybrid icing is horrible. It serves no purpose. It's supposed to eliminate injuries, so let's look at how it's implemented.

Scenario 1: The puck is iced and the defenseman has a clear-cut advantage to get to the puck first. Since there's no real competition for the puck, icing is called.
Scenario 2: The puck is iced and it's a dead heat between a defenseman and a forward trying to beat it out. Since it's up for grabs, hybrid icing is not called.

In scenario 1, whether there's hybrid icing or not, there will be no injury since 2 players won't go crashing into the boards. Only in scenario 2 would there be a possible injury, and hybrid icing doesn't eliminate that.

Further (gets up high on horse), I'd argue that more injuries occur on hits that DON'T involve a potential icing call. So why are we so concerned with eliminating a play where maybe 1-2 guys get injured a year when we can eliminate a ton of injuries by removing hitting altogether?

The only advantage to Hybrid icing is that he could speed up the game. The team wouldnt be forced to go back and get the puck. It could cross the line and the Goalies could just shoot the puck down the ice and, bam, were ready for a face-off.

I usually either give away my preseason games or I just go.

It's almost not worth the effort to sell them because you don't get anything back for them.

- johndewar

cool cheap way to see some of the new guys and guys trying to make the team. Hard to find cheaper high level hockey.

So the hybrid icing is not a done deal for the regular season?
It is just getting a tryout?

I had to watch the game on a crappy Internet feed and missed some of the subtle plays.

When does NHL center ice start, the regular season?

True, but one of my favorite goals of all time was the 1996 World Cup of Hockey Finals Game 1. The US trailed by 1 goal late in the 3rd and pulled the goalie. Canada iced it with 8-9 seconds left. Chelios had to race like a man possessed to touch up, and he got there with a few seconds. On the ensuing face-off, LeClair scored to force OT. The faceoff would happen with or without the hybrid icing, but the way that Chelios (f him) had to race to keep the game alive was the type of play you love to see hockey players make.

He was horrendous last night...so undisciplined, he might have all the talent in the world, but its no good if he cant stay out of the box....columbus was roughing him up pretty badly.
- PhillaBully

Yeah I think the Flyers let the cat out of the bag on him. I think other teams are going to do everything they can to get him to lose his cool...

Hybrid icing is being considered. This is a test drive. They'll decide after the preseason.

But (puts of Jim Jackson hat and stache) whenever he plays the Flyers, he's able to elbow and high stick his way to glory without anything getting called.

Players will still have to race for the puck, they're just making the race end ten feet earlier.

I'd rather see the hybrid icing stay than see another Joni Pitkanen or Pat Peake.

Nope. Whatever time is gained by these faceoffs, I guarentee will be made up for in extending TV time-outs.

A nice moment, but not really a reason to keep it. In that situation, the icing rules shouldn't favor the team icing the puck.

The NHL TV timeouts aren't nearly as bad as other sports

When they start putting advertisements on their jersey's is the day I seriously consider stop watching. The "Union Bimbos" drive me nuts...

Yea there aren't lots and lots of injuries, but when they do happen on these icing plays, they're brutal/career threatening/ending. There are even injuries on plays where the Dman is pretty much a clear cut winner, they aren't all necessarily during neck and neck races. I have no problem if they institute the rule

I'd be deadset against bringing in "No Touch" icing, because that would eliminate effort. Hybrid icing doesn't. There's still a race for the puck...it just now ends 10 feet before guys get slammed into a wall

There's a theory that they outlawed jersey tucking this year as a precursor to selling ad space.

I've been in favor of hybrid icing, or at least trying it, for a while now. I did find myself scratching my head a couple times last night at why it was or wasn't called. Not sure if it's just something to get used to, or if I'm not wild about putting a judgement call on the refs.

I always liked Gagne's tucked in Jersey and G's half tuck. If I were an NHL player, I would go with the half-tuck.

UGH, I'm sure both players and owners would like it cuz it generates more money. But it's seriously tacky.
