What a mess. 1 year at $1.75 million is probably about right, but hopefully he doesn't take a roster spot from a younger/better player. Holland better start working the phones hard to clean up this clusterf--k.

I'm fine with Cleary not coming here. I wanted Simon Gagne signed anyway...
- flyler

I agree and hopefully Gagne is signed soon. If Cleary had been a Flyer it pretty much would have been not good for Gagne to return. As a flyer fan losing Cleary means a chance should be taken to acquire Brendan Morrow, if that fails then sign Gagne.

the real trash is sammuelson tootoo and bertuzzi (who i still like but he just isnt worth hanging on to)

problem is they all have 0 value on the market

Cleary collected 10 points in 14 games, outscoring Datsyuk, Franzen, Filpula, etc. while seeing time on all 4 lines. Yes he is getting older, but hard-working, versatile, playoff performers like Cleary are key to playoff success

It's Dan (frank)ing cleary...
Who cares? Can't believe this is such a news story (not just here but across sports outlets).

Ek pushes anything Flyer related because it's the team he's closest to/follows the most. why do you think half of his trade/UFA headlines include "so and so NOT going to Philly"

And no trade clauses. The Wings can ask them to waive them and they probably will if they're going to get to play more but still another hoop to jump through.

Your only right about a couple of things, he did have surgery and he would have been over paid in philly for the contract they offered. With that said hes a solid 3rd liner on almost any team and WELL worth 1.75 for a ONE YEAR DEAL! he competes hard every game, he doesnt put up outstanding numbers but hes far from "crap" the last 3 years. To me if philly had got him for 1 year 1.75, i would have said "outstanding signing and im totally jealous"
- digitalbath

If it's truly only a 1-year deal at 1.75... then I can stomach it IF he stays healthy. Don't want ANY part of multi-year deal.

The problem is that Babcock puts him on the second line. And Cleary is NOT a finisher. Far from it. Also... he is not nearly as effective as he was a few years ago. The problem now is that he coughs up the puck a lot (especially behind his own net and along the boards). I agree he works hard and adds grit in the playoffs. Just don't want to see another young talented player sitting because of this signing.

Agreed that Samuellson and Bertuzzi's contracts are a complete waste on this team (arguably the worst 2 signings of Holland tenure). Nobody will touch these old goats on waivers or their contracts and at this stage of their careers they don't add much to the team.

I thought it was me? Why is Cleary getting all this attention? NHL GM's cannot come up with real moves after a super boring offseason?

Because he is a quality depth signing, there arent any awesome UFA left really, maybe morrow and brunner? but brunner has already had huge rumors hes going to swiss league because no one is going to pay him 4 mil here.

Yo, if everyone could please, just calm down. I know Mr. Cleary on an extremely personal level, and he is a very humble man. I'm certain Daniel never had the intention to enrage Flyer and hockey fans alike.

If we could please stop throwing poop at this very very generous man, and perhaps wait for his side of the story on the matter. We might all see this was one large misunderstanding. It is unfathomable that Daniel would act like such a Richard.

As well, these actions aren't the doing of the player... They're entirely on the agent. The agent does what's best for his client and tries to get the highest amount out of a team he can get, any team. This in turn creates a larger commission for the agent. It's win-win when an agent does stuff like this.

To be fair, Philly is involved in half the rumors. As part of their due diligence they are constantly asking about players to find value. They signed the top free agent defenseman, forward and goalie this offseason.

I don't think anyone is mad at him. It's just surprising that he'd turn down that much money. It's 3 years. It's not like he can't move back to Detroit after the deal ends. I'd be willing to uproot my kids and inconvenience my family for 3 years for $7M.

Cleary is a jerk. Karmas a female dog. When the Wings say bye bye next season good luck finding work. 3rd liners are a dime a dozen.

What? You think signing Streit was smart? Another horrible horrible contract in a year they bought out 2 FREAKING TERRIBLE CONTRACTS ALREADY! If another team was pulling this bullsh11te you guys would be laughing and ripping on any of their fans who defended it. Holmgren is finished, don't let him screw up the cap for another 10 years.
