Yeah, I'm thinking more & more I'd like to see Raffl get a shot...I know it's a big jump, but they seem to think he can do it

It will be the thing outside goalies to see how it unfolds.

Well, we know who the goalies will be, just have to hope that Emery can be as effective as he was in Chicago and that Mason can approach the level he was playing at after coming to Philly.

Wanna see who ends up the starter or if they'll take that into the season. Interesting seeing Halifax without the big 3. Only one they'll get back is Fucale.

I think it will be a true rotation, unless one of them really outplays the other.

I'm extremely optimistic about the Flyers goaltending picture.

Yeah, but it seems that they wanted Cleary or nothing. I'm fine with going with the kids to see if one of them can handle it.

If they can't, maybe Meszaros stays healthy enough to be traded, or force one of the other defensemen out the door and they can trade for a solid third liner.

- Jsaquella

Exactly -- I would've preferred Cleary because I think his production is easily projectable, but certainly, the Flyers had in-house candidates before he was mentioned. They're no worse off than they were before; if the younger players weren't motivated enough before, now they should absolutely realize that the Flyers aren't messing around -- they want production, and they want it now.

Agreed. Personally I favour Emery for the starting role because I feel he's pretty deserving at this stage in his career but when all the dust clears, I'm sure Mason will be our starter in the playoffs.

"Flyers not surprised Cleary staying with Red Wings":http://www.nhl.com/ice/bl...tm?id=20135&cmpid=nhl-twt

It's only surprising because at the end, when discussing youth options for 3rd line, Homer says,
"We were kind of anxious to look at a few guys in that position anyway," Holmgren said. "I don't know if you want to call it a silver lining, but it's really a good thing for us. Mike Raffl, a kid we signed, an Austrian kid who played in Sweden, we like. … [2012 first-round pick] Scott Laughton, who knows? There should be some competition for a couple spots up front."

So when asked about 3rd line youth, he recalls Raffl first...

24 isn't old. IIRC, Matt Read was 24 when he signed

Emery absolutely is. And I hope it happens for him. Not trying to root against Mason. But with what Emery has overcome, how can you not root for him.

amen... my sentiments exactly. i would've preferred the established guy (at least for this year) but i'm excited to see what the kids can do. i'd really like to see both laughton and mcginn make the team

I didn't mean to suggest that he's not youth. I was pointing out that while a lot of people here think that Raffl is very unlikely to make the NHL this year, it's possible that he could be a front runner for a big league spot in Homer's eyes.

From what Pryor says, they're really high on him.

Exactly how I see it. I liked the team before the Cleary stuff started, and I like them still.

The injuries were probably a factor, and maybe Gagne wanted too much money.

FWIW, Holmgren said that the reported numbers for Cleary were incorrect. It's believed his agent leaked them to get the Red Wings to pony up more scratch

That makes a lot of sense. $2,75 for 3 was pretty steep considerring.

I expected $2.5mm over 2 or 3 years, but apparently that was the agent spinning stuff...nothing hard to confirm that, but I have seen it mentioned by some

Not that I'm aware of, but I've heard he's a good two way player. Chris Pryor, who was head of scouting before Hextall came in, loved him and said he could play in the NHL right away. Dave Brown wasn't sure, but liked his upside.
