Bill, I think a blog on how a team that operates at the cap can be a problem. How it can limit the team and the moves they make. How decisions they make, like signing over 35 contracts can put them into "cap hell". Just to clear things up with some people.

Bill's written many excellent blogs on the Cap. I can help explain those issues in detail, including referencing where in the CBA it can be found. Along with information from other valid sources to corroborate what I post.

You are wasting your breath as am I, some people just don't get it.
Heck Detroit right now needs to shed some salary, I guess Ken Holland must be an idiot.

So Hal Gill is worthy of a try out while we're pretty decently stalked at that position and Dan Cleary is worthy of a 2.75 million contract over three years but have no interest in Simon Gagne who we originally traded for last season and played relatively well. Was he great, no. He was good though.

With this said, if the Flyers do not have a change of heart about Gagne I'm now officially hoping Laughton or McGinn make the team out of Camp.

Holmgren was asked that question directly and said yes.
- bmeltzer

just saw that on PST on my DVR. cleary might have had remorse having signed a deal here, but he would have been obligated by contractual terms. since the cap situation prevented the flyers from inking him now, he slipped away...and the team likely dodged a bullet. i was on board w/ cleary for 2 yrs at ~ $2 MM, but i didn't like the xtra term/$$...

It's the reality. I've spent the most time and actually have read and studied the CBA multiple times. I could provide to you the actual Dollar figure of the Flyers current off season Cap picture. It's not gloating, it's just the truth.

Not sure what to make of that, and why the Flyers lost interest in Gagne.

The injuries were probably a factor, and maybe Gagne wanted too much money.

FWIW, Holmgren said that the reported numbers for Cleary were incorrect. It's believed his agent leaked them to get the Red Wings to pony up more scratch

They way it was worded in Rob Parent's column was "Holmgren denied that speculated offer was accurate, but there’s little doubt that the offer was much better than what Cleary took from Detroit"

Considering Cleary took 1 year and a pay cut of over $1mm, Yeah, Homer probably had to offer more than what Detroit gave him

Seravalli just tweeted that Chad Larose's agent asked the Flyers if they had interest in his client as a PTO after Cleary fell through, but says Hair Gel Boy, the Flyers are standing pat

That might not be that bad a choice, it cost them nothing to look.

Yeah, but it seems that they wanted Cleary or nothing. I'm fine with going with the kids to see if one of them can handle it.

If they can't, maybe Meszaros stays healthy enough to be traded, or force one of the other defensemen out the door and they can trade for a solid third liner.
