You really going to let him have the last word like that? Calling your logic flawd? Man-o-man.

I feel like I'm in good company, there's all the professionals talking about it in Toronto today, Paul Holmgren referenced it and Bill mentioned it in his Blog and then there's me... just hanging on the thread trying to let it die while you fan the flames for your own amusement.

You've got a bit of an evil streak...

I can dig it.

That's funny since they mentioned Holmgren by name when some reporter mentioned an offer sheet.

How awesome would that be? It won't happen. But it would be awesome. We'd treat him well!

Is it possible to have a Cap problem while being Cap compliant?

Yes, it is.

Finally camp is open, let the games begin!!

So Cleary decided to stay with Detroit, big whoop

And they aren't going to offer a Gagne a deal, big whoop again!

Lets give the kids a fair shot to earn a spot and see what happens. I am fine with a forward group of:
Hartnell-G-Voracek
Schenn-Vinnie-Read or Simmonds
Talbot, McGinn or Laughton-Couturier-Read or Simmonds
Talbot, McGinn or Rosehill-Laughton or Hall-Rinaldo

On D, again no real need to make a move if no one is willing to take a dman off our hands. They can get cap compliant by sending down Couturier and Schenn for a few hours and then putting Pronger on LTIR.

I'm just as fine with a D corps of:
Timonen-Schenn
Coburn-Streit
Grossmann-Mezaros
Gus

They could either then waive Gervais or opt to start the season with 13 forwards and 8 dmen; Bourdon will almost certainly start the year on IR and won't factor into the active roster. I'm not worried about Gus getting playing time even if they keep Mez as we all know it won't take long for a dman to get hurt.

Finally, the battle between Mason and Emery for the #1 spot should be fun to watch and I expect both to have very good seasons.

Well if Mayor is saying they have Cap problems, couldn't he be right, even if they are able to get under the Cap? I mean they will likely have to trade Coburn or Meszaros, and/or send Laughton back to juniors because of Cap. IMO if you lose any asset because of Cap, its a problem...

The Flyers don't have to trade anyone because of the Cap. Nor do they have to send Laughton back to Juniors because of the cap.

No your point was that the Flyers have a Cap problem because they're over the Cap. When in fact they aren't now, and will be Cap compliant when the Season starts. You still have not made a valid argument for why the Flyers have a Cap problem. Whether or not the Flyers have a Cap problem, was the genesis of the entire conversation. And I showed that they don't have a Cap problem.
- MJL

Haven't been on the site in a little while, but yesterday I saw this as I was lurking instead of working. By your logic MJL if I'm driving 100 miles an hour towards a brick wall that's 25 feet away I don't have an imminent crash.

The very definition of the word problem is an unwelcome or harmful situation that needs to be dealt with and overcome. Whether I have .3 seconds to avert the crash or the Flyers have a month to become compliant doesn't matter. Both situations are present states that cannot be maintained.

Absolutely correct. They could simply send Couturier and B Schenn, who are both waiver exempt, to the Phantoms, then place Pronger on LTIR and bring both of the kids right back up. Problem solved. The only reason they would have had to trade someone or permanently waive someone would have been to sign Cleary.

Okay, but how much room will that leave for call-ups, and Cap space to aquire at the TDL?

It would leave plenty of space for call-ups as once Prongers goes on LTIR they will have 2-3 million in available space depending on the final roster. However there will be limited room for TDL acquisitions due to LTIR restrictions on prorating contracts. So if they want to add someone making significant money, they will have to shed salary. Of course that assumes that no other players get seriously injured and go on LTIR during the season which would give them much more space to work with.

Because of course they did.

Please tell me they mentioned the Flyers have "goaltending problems" in the same breath.

I mean, if you're gonna beat a league wide narrative about a franchise into the ground, you might as well do it right.

So then, its safe to say, it could be a problem. FOr example if Nashville decides to trade Shea Weber at the deadline, we wont have any Cap space to get him, and will have to trade a significant chunk of Cap to get him.... Right?

Sounds like a problem to me....

They had a sound bite on Hockey Central where the GM was saying that Pietrangelo would be a Blue for the forseeable future and that all the poaching teams out there, I'm looking at you Paul Holmgren, could forget about any offer sheets.

Very poor analogy. And honestly, making that analogy shows that you don't get my logic. And really has zero to do with the Flyers Cap situation. All 30 teams in the NHL have to make moves to become Cap compliant on the last day of training camp. Flyers are no different. Feel free to provide the unwelcome or harmful situation that the Flyers are faced with, as it relates to the Salary Cap.
