I'd be okay with Cleary for one reason.

He is a winner, who knows what it takes, and plays the game the right way.

There are still many young forwards on this team, including Giroux imo who could learn a thing or two from players like Cleary. I'd welcome him in, and hopefully that winning attitude, rubs off on the players of this young core that still need to be groomed.

agreed!

Now maybe we can move a piece or 2 (if he signs here), for youth on the blue line

Either way the Cleary thing shakes out, I'm over it at this point. The Flyers have viable (and arguably, preferable) back up plans to Daniel Cleary. I'm not worried.

Tangentially, I'm taking my son to training camp on Saturday AM.......I like the sound of the whole fan fest thing they are setting up. Should be something fun to do on a Saturday AM.

It'll be nice to add Cleary, but it's not the end of the world if they don't. He would have brought some things that they could use, but it's not as if he's a 26 minute a night stud defenseman or sniping 40 goal scorer.

He's a good, solid third liner that works hard and can chip in offensively. Those guys are good to have, but they're more commonplace than an Alex Pietrangelo

Guess we'llfind out ina few hours if Cleary is going to be a Flyer or not. Nothing is ever easy in the Flyer Zone!!

On another topic: Bill, how would you rate Laughton's chances of making the final roster?

- BiggE

I think what happens with Cleary will affect Laughton. If Talbot's on line three (and that is also assuming that Gagne is no longer an alternative), there could be a fourth line spot up for grabs. If Cleary comes here, I don't see any way Laughton makes the team except in the event of injuries or a forward being traded.

Another stellar article, Bill. Rest up, you just turned 39 (again), after all.

It may increase forechecking opportunities if the goalie can't stop the puck within the trapezoid, but it also took away the giveaways that were a byproduct of especially daring goalies who roamed from corner to corner to play the puck.

I miss scouting reports like "he turns random dump-ins into live hand grenades." That gem was written about one Arturs Irbe. Get rid of the trapezoid. Anything trap and hockey are like oil and water: they don't mix.

Woah, woah! We already have one Tangent_man, I don't think we can handle another.

Have fun at camp!

Great write up on the goalies. Bryz's inability to handle the puck was the driving factor for me for why I wanted him bought out. His quirkiness never bothered me. It was like night/day when watching mason control it for our d. We will spending a lot less time in our end Bc of it

Bryz didn't have a stick, but a spatula -- great for turnovers.

I was much more bothered by his seeming inability stop pucks at a consistently high level.

Jonathon Quick is a terrible puck handler, but he's a fantastic goalie. I'd rather have the guy that keeps the puck out of the net than the guy who can make an outlet pass.

Can't say I agree. Besides breakaways, he stopped enough pucks for me. I never noticed quick to be a very poor puck handler, at least not like bryz

The fact Bryzgalov handled the puck like it was a grenade was a sight to behold. But his inability to actually stop the puck is why he's no longer here.

It's September 12, and he's not on an NHL team. That speaks volumes.

T-minus 15 minutes until Cleary takes the ice!

Dan Cleary is not at #Flyers camp. He was slated to be on ice with first group at 8:30 today.

I'm probably a bit biased here, because I wasn't cool with the length of the Cleary deal...but if he makes a deal with the Flyers, and then tries to back out to go with another team, I don't really want him. I understand it was only a handshake deal with a PTO, but still seems like a crap move.

Yeah, but he's awesome at winning playoff games. I'd deal with it.

Hopefully the end result of failing to land Cleary, is more playing time for Rosehill.

Boom! Everyone's a winner.

I'm ok with his 3 year offer more so than Vinny getting 5 years

wonder if he used Philly to get Detroit to budge on $$$ or term?

- puckhead17

Vinny is ten times the player Cleary is, and doesn't have chronic knee problems.

Simon Gagne, and Brendan Morrow aren't on NHL teams either.

Huh, reminds me of a certain douche move to go the Penguins last trade deadline. Of course that's a pre-req to going there...

I of course exaggerate gotta warm up those rivalry muscles...

Definitely a Boon, especially when contrasted with Bryz's kindergarten level puck-handling skills.

Speaking of Bryz, is he the new Waldo?

- wolfhounds

Interesting. I always though of it more like "Where in the world is Carmen SanDiego" but yeah Waldo works.

I am looking forward to watching our goalies stick handle, or stop break aways...
The adrenaline rush or holding of the breath on either of those with Bryz was exciting for about 1.3 games.

I'm looking forward to there being less breakaways and odd man rushes personally.
