The hardest thing to believe is that someone actually gave Cleary a better offer! I mean 8.25 million over 3 years is pretty good $$ for a 3rd liner. I'd be pretty shocked if another team gave him a 4th year or a deal at 3 million per year.

The problem I have with the Cleary signing is that it seems to show they are in a win now type of mode. Cleary is a guy you acquire because he has that warrior like ability that is desperately needed in the playoffs. If they were being patient, they could have one of the younger guys come up and take that spot and get some much needed work at the NHL level.

I dont mind Cleary (i think he is a decent player who has a ton of heart), but 3 years at 2.75 (carrying him until he is 37) is kind of puzzling to me.

I fail to see why they aren't in win now mode? They have 4 lines that are exceptionally good. The top two can score at will and the bottom 2 can score and have some very good two way players in Read, Coots, Cleary, Talbot, Hall. Their D is coming back healthy and I do believe with Streit their D can be very good. Factor in a goalie that went 18-1 last, plus the excellent special teams they had last year why can't they win? In my opinion they are every bit as good as anyone in the East.

The Flyers capologist screwed up, and the Cleary offer was pulled.

I just realized that the Canes are in our division...so not sure how I'd feel about trading Meszaros...if (IF) he's healthy, he could burn us.

That's a poor analogy that doesn't fit. What is the specific problem?
- MJL

So you're telling me there's no cap problem? They're currently 2 million over the cap. sure they can shuffle the deck chairs and write off the Pronger contract but that doesn't mean they are in a good cap position and that's a problem.

If they really want Cleary and can't sign him today because they don't have cap room and they lose him because of that then there's a problem. (supposition but valid example)

...and if you don't like my analogy it doesn't mean it's not an effective cry for help.

There is no contract to approve at this time. He is in Flyers Camp on a PTO.
- MJL

Technically, yes. But this is not the usual PTO.

Then if there is only an agreement in place, how does each side protect itself in the event one side changes their mind?

Between exploding golf clubs, Cleary, a concussion in the rookie game, all this before the first day of camp...

I'm bummed. I was excited to see Cleary join the team. If it does fall through, I'd rather see them go with kids than bring Gagne back. Hell, even Morrow would be a better fit than Gagne, and I'm not a fan of Morrow.

I think a more suitable analogy would be something like, "Just because I enjoyed Rocky 4 doesn't mean I'm a Dolf Lundgren fan."

Who is giving him a better deal? Only thing I could think of is if Detroit caved.

Actually, they could sign him now. They have a 10% cushion in the off season where they can exceed the cap. The trouble is, getting back under to place Pronger and maybe Bourdon on LTIR and get the full benefit of their exemption.

My interest is Murphy. Just need a filler. Komisarek is a filler.
- youarewrong

Still part of the trade. You have the Flyers trading 2 top 4 NHL defenseman, and a solid prospect, for a suspect NHL defenseman, and a nice defensive prospect. It's a horrendous deal.

Well maybe it is the Physical. It really makes the most sense right now unless there was something really screwy or the Wings jumped back in. Anxious to hear.

I agree, I have to think they have some very serious concerns regarding Gagne's health and/or his ability to stay healthy, and Morrow is another guy who seems to really be slowing down at this point in his career.

To me, Cleary was significant upgrade over a guy like Fedotenko or even Gagne and his style of play was a good fit on the 3rd line. That being said, I have no problem whatsoever with Talbot on the 3rd line (the guy nearly scored 20 goals in 11-12!) and letting Laughton, Hall, Rosehill and McGinn battle it out to play on the 4th line with Rinaldo.

Sure, he could have. Have you ever failed a physical? I have. Of course, many people have physicals, and some people have failed them. Could it have happened? I supposed it could have.
