When a player, in this case Kessel comes out and says "I'm not negotiating mid season" it's a tactic..... plain and simple.

If he doesn't re-sign then the blame squarely lies on Leafs management because this extension is a no brainer. He gets max years at 8 and somewhere around Getzlaf/Perry money. Kessel simply will not get anymore than that on the open market given the Leafs can offer the extra year, unless some poopbag team wants to make Kessel the richest player in the league which isn't happening.
