Ok thx so that gives them just under 3.3 M left with holzer and smith in ahl.
Franson gets a 1 year deal at mid 2's and if he plays well next year he gets the term he wants at the 4 he is looking for. Suck it up for 1 more year Franson.
Should we as fans organize some kind of fundraiser for him to help him in this tough time. ?
Man I would love to be only be making 2.5 M this year. - D.Lemieux

Good Article about Bernier..
"Your agent has yet to speak to an NHL executive or scout who does not think Bernier has the goods to become a star.
The interesting thing about the Leafs goaltending situation is the fans have not rushed to embrace Bernier with their usual early enthusiasm.
Part of this must be the wariness bred from other would-be saviours over the years, from Andrew Raycroft to Vesa Toskala. The other part is affection for the incumbent, James Reimer, who won a lot of hearts by coming out of nowhere two years ago to grab the No. 1 job and then fought his way back from a concussion to grab it again last season.
Hence all of the talk about a “goaltending controversy.” Well, this is not going to be much of a controversy because barring injury, Bernier, 25, will have the top job nailed down by the end of October.
Bernier went 9-3-1 in 14 games last season with the Los Angeles Kings, with a .922 save percentage and 1.88 goals-against average. He bailed out the Kings when Jonathan Quick struggled at the start of the season and should have kept the No. 1 job.
There are those in the hockey world who say Los Angeles GM Dean Lombardi might have been tempted to trade Quick, who won the Kings the 2012 Stanley Cup, instead of Bernier. But since Quick is an American it would have been a foolhardy move with Southern California hockey fans.
The betting here is come June, Nonis’s trade for Bernier will be ranked among the top one or two NHL off-season moves for 2013-14."

don't think the Leafs can afford a $4 million hit this year? - scotch_tape
well they are going to have to find 3.5-4 million, otherwise Franson wont sign.
i would think he would look at the situation with Gunnarsson, and simply say i want a better deal than that. i would if i was him. |

I'd love to get Franson on a one year deal. Retrospectively they prob should have just given him an extra year last contract. Im sure he'll want either a big contract, or a short one at two year deal. I can't see him wanting to put himself in another RFA position next year. |

3rd pairing??
you mean 2nd pairng, with a lot of pp time....
i don't share the same love affair with gunnarsson as you.. i don't mind him, but i don't think he is that much better than franson... but thats me, i tend to watch the games and not listen to media. |

I haven't really seen much in the media about Gunnarsson being better than... anyone.
I actually haven't read anything about Gunnarsson in the media... like... ever.
Do they even know he exists?
Edit: and Franson was 5th in TOI/G, 7th in ESTOI/G... and was most frequently paired with Fraser...
He was bottom pairing, with second PP duty. Pretty much the definition of a sheltered player. He did awesome in his role... but he wasn't a key player for the Leafs last season.

franson fraser was the third pairing.. they were all year.. its not even debatable. and no, the last 4 games of the playoffs does not make him a defacto second pairing guy.. not at all. not when it was due to injury.
most of their shifts were against 3rd and 4th lines during the regular season.
sure.. he got PP time.. but to offset that Gunnar got PK time so that offsets that.
Franson is worth about 2.5 tops.. he has no leverage.. so if he wants to ruin his career and sit because of a squable over a few hundred thousand.. let him

The point being, Franson clearly wasn't a better option than an injured Gunnarsson. Nobody on the team was. |

Franson is like Bobby Orr, only with better knees. |
