How do you know if they can fill a spot on the team if you don't give them a chance? I think Talbot is a capable 3rd line Winger, and that leaves a 4th line spot open to try and develop a young player.
- MJL

You had no problem with Shelley playing on the 4th line, now you have an issue signing Cleary and depriving a young player of a 4th line role?

You just argue for the sake of arguing.

I think these lines creates really strong shutdown game with the bottom 2 lines. And stong offensive game with the top 2 lines.

The Flyers didn't sign Cleary to play on the 4th line, and they didn't sign him to be a part time player. If Cleary was signed to a 2 year deal for 1.1M a year, as a role player. I wouldn't have an issue with it. Shelley also never blocked a younger player from getting icetime.

So your comparison here, falls way short. And is not even close to a comparable situation.

That third line can provide some offense, as well.

Exactly -- and it's versatile enough where, as someone astutely mentioned earlier, if L2 isn't strong enough defensively, you can easily flip-flop Simmonds and Read...and maybe have a vicious third line and more defensive ability on the second.

He has a problem with it because he was so sure Laughton was going to make the team, even though we have a surplus of centers, too many contacts, etc etc etc....

Exactly -- but let's be honest here: Sean Couturier really needs to move his game forward. He's the key to that third line. He has to make plays for his wingers, show some power in driving possession.

In short, he has to be the guy the Flyers drafted: A two-way forward who does produce offensively. Really, that third line has to be a strong line, a potent line offensively and defensively, for the Flyers to separate themselves from other teams.

For the record, that's why I don't think Max Talbot's a third-line winger. The Flyers need 12-15 goals out of 3LW. I said that two months ago, and to be blunt: Maxime Talbot brings a lot of good things to a team, but 12-15 even-strength goals...that's asking too much from him. And the Flyers need those goals.

I still feel that Laughton has a very good chance of making the team. And Laughton can play Wing. And as I've said to you many times previously. There is no such thing as having too many Centers.

Very true. If he plays with Cleary and Read, I think it will help him. Read's got good speed and smarts and Cleary will help give them space to work in, as well as clean up rebounds. Couturier's best offensive play came with Read last year

It probably is a wash, defensively. But Cleary is a solid PK guy, too.

My only issue is the length of the deal, and what this means for our young forwards moving forward. With any sort of luck, which the Flyers are long overdue for, guys like Laughton, McGinn, and Noebels should be looking to make the jump to the NHL in the next 1-2 years. I think there may be a logjam at forward with a veteran signed to a multi-year deal with a NTC.

that's really my only issue (i really like the move from a pure hockey standpoint). looking more and more like we'll be kissing matt read goodbye in july

Well he'll have to beat out Hall at this point. I don't see the Flyers starting Rinaldo or Talbot as healthy scratches. I think his best shot is an injury to someone, honestly.
- jmatchett383

i believe it's possible with rinaldo

I don't see the Cleary signing affecting whether Read stays or goes.

i hope it doesnt. and i get it: who knows what the exact situation will be when they get to that point. maybe they'll shed some salary elsewhere, something like that. i just mean that while i like the additions, all of these veteran deals have me worried about the cap situation for the upcoming years (there's only so much cap space per year)

EDIT: but such is life as a flyers fan. should be adequately prepared for it by now
