I actually thought of this yesterday... Then boom an thread by Jan and an article on IslesPointBlank, lol.

But yes, I would do this in a heartbeat. This not only screws the Rags but sets the Islanders up perfectly for years... Having JT as the #1 and then Stepan at #2, which also drops Frans to where he should be, its perfect. Might be one of the top Center groups in the league.

I'd offer Stepan 5yrs $25M... Fits out cap structure and would screw the Rags if they matched. Stepan gets what he wants and prob a little more then he deserves.

MM- JT - PMB
KO - Stepan - Bailey
Grabs - Franz - McDonald
CC - CC - MM

Something like that, looks pretty damn good and you call roll 4 lines the entire game...

Stepan would never sign an offer sheet with the Islanders. Its about as absurd as the idea of Lundqvist signing wtih the Isles if he were to hit UFA status.

Bottom 6 can be changed either way... I just like the idea of the CCM line.

How on earth do you know?
If the Rags are offering him 2-3yrs at $3m per and the Isles offer 5yrs at $5m per... He would sign. They dont have fan loyalty like you and I have. Money talks and always will. If he aint getting it from the Rags, as much as he might love the Rags and hate the Isles, that money will convert him.

straight cash homie.... isles are as close to a cup as the rangers are...Hank is tired of losing 2-1 and getting blamed for it..people know we can score goals...it is not out of the realm of possibility that hank could come to the isles SHOULD he hit the market

Yea I believe he can contribute more offensively as well... We will have to see how Cappy sets the lines...

On the compensation front,

Here are the compensation ranges:
•$1,110,249 or below - No Compensation
•Over $1,110,249 to $1,682,194 - 3rd round pick
•Over $1,682,194 to $3,364,391 - 2nd round pick
•Over $3,364,391 to $5,046,585 - 1st round pick, 3rd
•Over $5,046,585 to $6,728,781 - 1st round pick, 2nd, 3rd
•Over $6,728,781 To $8,410,976 - Two 1st Round Picks, 2nd, 3rd
•Over $8,410,976 - Four 1st Round Picks

Stepan is worth a 1st rd pick... but the other question is, would all of these picks be from the same draft?

100% agree with you... Money talks period.

If he hits the open market (which he shouldnt) Isles better be in on him, along with the rest of the league

It'd be great to snag Hank but I don't think we'd win the money battle.

Nobody knows anything. Its an assumption. Besides, if you sign Stephan to an offer sheet, the Rangers are going to look to return the favor at some point, buy offer-sheeting one of our elite prospects in the near future or worse yet, going all-in to sign JT away when his contract is up. There's a reason why offer sheets are used few and far between. Sometimes, the retribution is severe.

Weather we offer-sheet or not... The Rags are going to go all out on JT when his contract is up, just like every other team in the league... thats why you offer sheet Stephan.. build a team that wins & JT has no reason to contemplate anything elsewhere when the time comes.

There will probably be a lot of teams going all-in for JT when his contract is up. It has nothing to do with an offer sheet. I also doubt that a team will offer an inflated offer sheet just to get back at another team. It’s not in their best interests. The current team can just walk away, while the offer sheet team overpays and loses top draft picks.

I’m sure that offer sheets annoy the player’s GM. However, I don’t think it’s as personal as you make it out to be. Besides there will never be a trade between the Isles and the Rangers anyway. Who cares if it makes Sather mad.

I'm sure the Isles will offer JT a mega deal prior to his contract being up now that he is the captain. Strome would be the one they would go after...maybe make a deal Strome for Stephan....

No way I do that. I realize some folks are high on Stepan based on last years output, but I need to see more than what he's shown before I consider dealing Strome for him. That said, the Rags would never deal him to the Isles anyway as the interest would be high enough that teams out west would likely get him.
As for Tavares, I have almost no doubt at all that JT will be extended well before his contract expires. As long as the Isles don't go straight to the tank, he'll sign here again and again.

As for Lundqvist, I think Henrik stays with the Rangers no matter what. He loves it there and while the Isles will indeed be in Brooklyn, I think Lundqvist will ultimately choose sticking it out with the 'horse that brought him there'.

Lundqvist hits UFA next year and the Rangers are so cap strapped. I would offer a blank check for him. What do the Isles have to lose in doing so.

Offer sheeting Stepan would be a mistake. Great player that I'd love to have, but the backlash that results from it would be more detrimental to the team down the road. Garth doesn't need to give other GM's any more of a reason to dislike him. Not to mention, as IPB pointed out, the Rags deep pockets could easily (frank) us out of an asset down the line. It won't be Tavares, but giving them a strong reason to spite us could really turn the tables big time. Stepan is great, but it would be a huge risk.

Now that all of that is said, offer sheets pretty much don't exist and Snow isn't going to throw one at him.

If he was offered more money you better believe he will sign with us. If he loved his team so much he would have accepted a one year deal already.

Isles need to reach out to him regardless. In fact Isles have a decent chance since Hank wants to stay in NY

It'd be different if you were talking about a team that's garbage and going nowhere....but with us? I'm CERTAIN he'd use us to make Sather pay him the money....guaranteed.

Let's cool our jets on Lundqvist talk. Aside from the fact that players of his caliber rarely end up leaving their teams, even when sides are rumored to be "far apart", he's going to be 32 after this season. I don't know if I'm willing to offer him the maximum term contract that is going to make him the highest paid player in the league and take until he's 40 to expire. He's not going to be the King until the day he retires. Goaltenders usually experience a drop-off in play around their mid-30's.
