Toronto should only trade Phaneuf if someone is willing to overpay. Like the return the pens got for Jordan Staal or better.

Phaneuf will likely only want a 5 year deal at 7-7.5M per year which is not bad for a defenseman who eats 23+ minutes a night successfully. The reason I think he would want 5 years is that he will be 34 when the contract expires meaning he will be 1 year under the 35+ rule and can sign his final contract for as long as he wants without the team getting screwed.

If he signs an 8 year deal he will be 37 and likely would only be able to get 1 year deals and probably make less money in the end.

Anyway my point is the Leafs will have to pay a top defenseman 7M+ for the next 5 years to be competitive so they might as well keep Phaneuf unless somehow they can turn the pieces they get from Phaneuf with others for a Pietrangelo level player.

He will get way more now on an 8 year deal for those years 34-37 then he will if he signs at 34 yrs old. Easily twice as much in fact.

Disagree
Phaneuf would be best Two-way on these

Someone in the Ottawa blog just called Colin Greening "Eric Lindros with more speed" and I just had to leave.

Poile was taking Jones if he had first pick. You couldn't pry Seth out of Poile's grubbies for Crosby. Well, maybe if Sid made half of what he does.
- R4Z0R

Good because we certainly wouldn't trade Tavares for him.

I don't share the same amount of enthusiasm for Phaneuf as my fellow Islander fan, but he would absolutely be a #1 guy on ANA, DET, PHI, and WAS.

When he played that many minutes he hurt the team.
- robin_steele264

He's fine playing 27, it's when he get's to the 30+ neighborhood that it gets to be an issue.

Guy on Anaheim finished 4th in Norris voting last year.

Beauchemin had a great year but I think it's at least plausible to suggest he overachieved. Speaking to the body of work of both players over the course of their careers, I'd put more stock in Phaneuf being the more highly valued player.

And I hate Phaneuf.

You could probably add BUF to that list too, unless Tyler Myers turns his game up a few notches.

Probably a wise choice. We've heard that kid plays a little hockey.

Tyler Myers would have to turn it up several notches, he's been garbage for the past 2 years. Anyone who thinks that Buffalo has a better defenseman right now than Phaneuf has no clue what they're watching.

It was cool to see Beauchemin do so well in Anaheim. Sure, the Leafs still getting the better end of that trade makes it easy to feel good about the other side, but Beauchemin seemed like a good guy in Toronto and it's like Ron Wilson just ruined him or something.

I notice Tavares ranked at five I think in Yahoo and a lot of people picking him in the top ten. You can't really go wrong with him as a pick I'd say, but do you guys see him getting top five points this year? Or is he a lock for top ten points? Just because there's so many other guys that could be up there, I'm wondering what's that rationale behind the projection. I can be convinced either way I didn't see much Isles last year

I can't imagine a scenario, other than injury, that he isn't a top-10 scorer this year.

I never draft the Twins or Ovechkin, they dont make my top 10, I just cant cheer for them to get points.

As everyone has been saying, the Oilers have too many D-men fighting for the 5,6,7 spot. We'd have to be sending at least one of them in this trade, and maybe another somewhere else, if we are actually shopping for a defenseman (top 4 obviously)
