Has Gagne even been invited to camp?
- dingo8urbaby

He was not there today, and virtually all the Flyers/Phantoms veterans were there working out. Gill was not there, either.

The ELC benefit is a nice bird to have in hand, moving forward, but if Laughton is markedly better than any of the other candidates, he should make the team.

But, as Brad points out, there's a lot of solid guys out there, in addition to Raffl & McGinn, they could add a vet on a one year deal and he might be better than a developing Laughton or the other two kids.

- Jsaquella

That's true as well. I'm just not directly opposed to giving him a fair chance is all. yes, the ELC is nice, but it should be secondary to his ability.

Yes, Morin will be playing today. I didn't list him solely because I was focusing on players who will/may play pro this year.

Absolutely. I'm not dismissing him at all, the ELC is a factor if all else is equal.

Why no game day post icon Bill?
- youarewrong

Not an official game day . Rookie game is really more of a showcase scrimmage, although there is an actual opponent.

No doubt that Laughton could potentially help this season.

However, it's an odd year with the artificially lowered salary cap for this one season. Lots of depth guys getting squeezed out of NHL jobs. Would rather play one of them for a season -- Gagne even -- than starting Laughton's contract clock this year.

Flyers, a team annually at the top of the salary cap bracket, need to be doing all they can to get the most out of their top prospect's Eeeeeee-Elllllllll-Ceeeees.

Bill: What's your take on Cleary? Apparently his decision is coming today and he has guaranteed contracts from other teams. Any chance the Flyers are one of those teams? Also, what does your gut tell you about Mesz, Coburn, and Grossmann (who's the odd one out based on what you're hearing?)

And, does anyone know if Mason's mask is done yet? It'd be cool to see.

Yes, Leier is a slide contract...and yes, I read about Morin adding weight. Apparently he and Couturier used this summer to add mass.

I like Leier. He's kind of like Eric Wellwood. Maybe not as fast, but good wheels and solid two way player. Looked good for Portland in the handful of games I saw.

Was Portland the team that had some shady stuff going on and got fined last year?

That premise of getting the most out of a player ELC doesn't automatically mean that his next contract will be a higher figure. And you can't handle player development like that. If Laughton is ready for the NHL, and shows that he belongs on the Flyers, then he should make the team. And worry about that Cap issue 3 years from now. Do what's best for the player. And I don't see what a 4th year in Juniors is going to do for him. If he shows that he's overmatched and not ready for the NHL, then fine. But otherwise he belongs on the Flyers.

I think the only people Gill could blend in with would be at the Lauridsen family reunion.
