So, Morrow's playoffs were more impressive because his team got further? He didn't play well in the playoffs, he ran out of gas. So yeah, Cleary's playoff work was more impressive than Morrow's, because Cleary put up his numbers against the first and second seeds in the West, while Morrow's team played the 7 and 8 seeds in the East.

That's like saying Thomas Vokoun is better than Henrik Lundqvist because his team went deeper in the playoffs. When comparing individual players, how deep the team went is, at best, a secondary concern

Actually Cleary had plenty of missed opportunities and was a topic of complaint a few times on the radio here in Detroit. If Cleary was that great, he would have a new topic with the Wings. Believe me when I say, they do not shy away from the old timers.

The Red Wings offered him a contract, and remain interested in bringing him back, but they don't have the cap room after signing Alfredsson and Weiss.

If Morrow was still great, how is it that he isn't fielding 3 offers, like Cleary? He's turning down PTO offers.

Why isn't Cleary accepting these offers? What is he being offered? Who was Cleary playing with in this one great playoff? Cleary is not a consistent player. He's too proud to stay put on a tryout in Detroit. Is Gagne that proud or is he loyal to the team he's most familiar with. Talk up Cleary's playoff run but I need more then that to be impressed. Cleary is also as injury prone as they come. Gagne is my first choice and Morrow is my second. You've gotta make the playoffs before you can do anything in the playoffs.

Cleary's stated preference is to remain in Detroit, but the cap situation is preventing him from re-signing now.

He also doesn't want to attend any camp on a tryout, he wants a contract. Which is actually pretty smart, since he was reportedly offered deals back in July and was waiting on Detroit. Why should he report on a PTO and risk injury when he has offers waiting for him elsewhere?

Cleary is not as injury prone as Gagne. In the past 3 seasons, Gagne has missed 77 out of a possible 212 games. That's nearly 40% of the games. Cleary has missed 19 over the same span.

As for loyalty, I prefer a guy that can fit the needs of the team. I feel Cleary does that better than Gagne. They don't need a fading former 47 goal scorer, they need a guy who has some sandpaper to his game, to create room for guys like Read and Couturier.

I'm not against bringing back Gagne, I just prefer Cleary.

He's a solid grinder that brings grit, decent hands and speed to the third line, which is precisely what they need.

My personal preference is to use one of the kids on hand, but if they go the veteran route, I'd go with Cleary, then Gagne. No interest in Brendan Morrow at this stage of his career.

I know exactly who Dan Cleary is and the difference between him and Morrow is a toss up. If Cleary is getting offers elsewhere, god bless, they can have him.

Neither guy is make or break, it's filling a third line hole, that isn't anything critical.

I disagree that it's a toss up between him and Morrow, because Cleary still has decent speed.

Like I said, it didn't help Cleary in the regular season. I don't wanna sign a guy based on two rounds.

INJURY UPDATE: #Flyers (D) Mark Alt suffered a concussion in today's Flyers-Capitals rookie game. More to come in the game recap.

One game, one concussion. Not wasting any time. Setting the pace early.

For me, it comes down to the player's expected role on the team. If we're looking for a guy to be a role player, a grinder with some grit to play on the third line with the young kids, then Cleary is better at that role than Gagne.

If we want a guy who can play more in the top six, and play the PP if needed, then I'd give the edge to Gagne.

In general, I feel if you want a role player, you should get a guy who has been a role player his entire career. Not a guy who was an elite scoring winger, and is trying to become a role player in the later stages of his career. Not a hard and fast rule - there are always exceptions. But for what the Flyers need (or are perceived to need), I think Cleary is a better fit that Gagne.

That said, I like Gagne and don't think he'd necessarily hurt the team if they sign him. I just like Cleary better for the role of third line grinder.

It's based on his career to date...I also don't want to base a decision off a shortened 48 game season, that had teams struggling without training camps.

I'm honestly surprised they haven't just given us the Vince Lombardi already. It seems like an inevitability at this point.

No, I can see how you got that idea though. His Christmas card last year made a of people think that, but it still isn't official yet.

Per Helene St James on Twitter, Cleary will sign with Flyers, 3 years, $2.75mm cap hit, NTC...deal goes into effect at end of month, which helps the Flyers make cap room
