turn the NHL into MLB?

yeah.. no thanks. MLB has far better television / advertising deals than the NHL. this is what allows their small market teams to survive since they arent ever competitive anymore.

- Dozzer

I was just going to say that...fricking baseball and the same teams in the playoffs every year...why bother playing the 162 games

So if that tournament is any indication of things.... I'd say Granberg's "outside shot" of making the team should be pretty non existent.
- markmark

I'll say. The speed at this level was too much for him. Imagine AHL'ers let alone the NHL. He has some work to do, but I predict - it ain't happening.

Saying that, Pageau and Prince are stoopid fast. Damn Sens scouts.

How much parity do they have in the NBA, of MLB for that matter.

Leagues are more likely to get those kinds of deals when their large market teams are more competitive. Large markets more competitive = more eyeballs on the screen = more lucrative TV deals.
- The Shrike

actually they're more likely to get those deals when they have a massive casual fan base. look at the NHL. their big US market teams have been successful recently: LA, NYR, Chicago, Philly, Washington, Boston, Detroit. problem is that Joe Six-Pack in Oklahoma City isn't tuning into a Blackhawks-Red Wings game on Sunday afternoon. he will however tune into Yankees-Red Sox on Sunday night.

So, really no Cap..

The tax will bite them sooner or later if they go too far. Even the Yankees were whining about it this year, hoping they'd get A-Rod off the books so they could lessen the tax blow. Small market owners who are actual businessmen love it when the Yanks overspend though, as it means more money in their pockets.

he's gonna be 28 when the season starts. that's not young by any means per NHL standards. he's right in that prime window of his career where he will likely never be any better than he is right now.
- scotch_tape

I disagree s_tape...I think he could have something to offer to a team looking for some added speed with some offense for a third line. Nothing special by any means, but at 27(going on 28) hes still young enough in my books.

So we generate more money and ruin the NHL because now you have 4 strong teams, and a bunch of crappy teams that can pay the bills.. Wow..

SLOW DOWN COWBOY. I thought when you said "so no salary cap" I legitimately thought you just didn't understand luxury tax.

if he could get back to a more confident game, chip in 40-50 point range....he'd be a great aquisition for any team for a mill.....
What I like is that if any injuries to the top six happen, which they inevitably will, especially with Lupul, he can jump up and not hurt you.
Obviously he adds zero grit and plays too much on the outside for my liking, but for that price, I really don't understand the negativity throughout the thread.

I think what happened with the Raymond PTO is that Nonis thought it was Burrows. Someone had to fill the hole of "biter" left by Grabo.

You've given me an idea - the NHL should buy a car and driver for Nascar to promote the NHL. Now that challenge of changing rink menus to include possum pie, bull frog legs and hush puppies.

not with hockey and here is why

the strongest teams are typically canadian..

US networks dont give a flying (frank) about canadian franchises.

its just a fact.

so they need to set it up to give the smaller american market teams the advantage.

how would that drive revenues further?

and that's not a win-win scenario. franchises need to be able to generate their own stability. a soft-cap system would just revert the league's competitiveness to pre-lockout levels. the NHL obviously strives for competitive balance, which they have achieved.

- scotch_tape

It would drive renenues further because the New York Rangers would be able to generate interest from more casual fans in their much larger market than the Carolina Hurricanes would from their smaller one should either team become more competitive.

Short memories! Everyone said Hainsey was going to get black-balled for his work on behalf of the NHLPA during the lockout once he was UFA...low and behold...he would be an excellent PTO guy for the Leafs IMO, in addition to an already great invite in Raymond. He is going to rebound this year coming off that SCF hit a couple years back and his speed in a 3rd line capacity will help big time. Under a mil? Bonus.

Longer Franson hums and haws the more the more Rielly, Percy et al have a chance to impress and the money reserved for the RFA goes elsewhere and the Leafs recoup some assets in an RFA rights deal. Unfortunately in the case of Kadri there is no replacement.
