The next CBA they should include a luxury tax. That way, the teams that generate the majority of the leagues revenues would have the competitive advantage they need to drive revenues further, and the tax dollars collected could be plowed into revenue sharing, which would solve the small market teams negative cash flow problem. In business, they call that a win win scenario. - The Shrike
Translation - new cba should allow the Leafs to spend whatever they want.

So,
- Who pays this added tax ? The team that generates all of the money....
- How does this help them with the cap ? |

And?
You can't make subsequent trades?
The return on Yak alone would get you a lot more than Dion.

turn the NHL into MLB?
yeah.. no thanks. MLB has far better television / advertising deals than the NHL. this is what allows their small market teams to survive since they arent ever competitive anymore. |

I was really hoping the Flames would give Raymond a camp invite...wonder why he was passed by so many teams? Still young(er). - Colin Dambrauskas
he's gonna be 28 when the season starts. that's not young by any means per NHL standards. he's right in that prime window of his career where he will likely never be any better than he is right now. |

The way the tax works is you have a cap just like now, but you can exceed it if you pay (for example) a dollar per dollar tax on the overage. That tax money is then added to the existing revenue sharing pool, whereupon the NHL board of governors decide which teams receive it. Some may even be saved for an emergency fund. |

So if that tournament is any indication of things.... I'd say Granberg's "outside shot" of making the team should be pretty non existent. |

Leagues are more likely to get those kinds of deals when their large market teams are more competitive. Large markets more competitive = more eyeballs on the screen = more lucrative TV deals. |

how would that drive revenues further?
and that's not a win-win scenario. franchises need to be able to generate their own stability. a soft-cap system would just revert the league's competitiveness to pre-lockout levels. the NHL obviously strives for competitive balance, which they have achieved. |
