The - Kadri, Franson, Liles, Reimer, Pha9 - to the Flames debates have already started...

well, in all seriousness, Burke loves dealing with GM's he trusts......you just know Nonis and him are gonna pull something off, even if it's just a minor deal for Orr

5 of those 8 years he was the general manager for that team. That's not exactly something to be proud of.

Barring Toronto media and fans, the Maple Leafs are widely considered to be over achievers last year.

- Aerchon

it wasn't a 5 full seasons, btw. In fact, it was not even 4 full seasons (Nov 2008 - before the start of last year). Please go look at the prospects, roster and contracts most importantly of the 08-09 leafs burke took over. It's a bad joke . To think we are where we are today from that roster is incredible. Say we over achieved all you want, just because some advanced stats say so, etc. Look at the oilers with all those 1st overall picks in the last few years and they can't make the playoffs; Burke did a great job (free agent signings aside). Rebuilds take a LONG time when you start from absolute crap; please don't say he traded away 2 top picks for kessel, because if you put hamilton and seguin in our lineup and take out phil, we're nowhere near where we are today.

His drafting has been awesome. Now go fly a kite...
- whipper334

Oh it has? Well, then I'll just shut up. You'll have to forgive me, as I'm used to waiting until a prospect pans out or not to judge whether a GM's drafting has been "awesome".

And by that you mean successfully drafted an excellent array of players that will help the rebuild start. He's moved players that needed to move and got assets that will help the team in the future. So... yeah...
- Talking_hockey1

Right. As I mentioned to Whipper, I generally prefer to see how players, you know, actually pan out before hailing someone as a genius for selecting them. Not the way people roll in Calgary, I see. Good luck with that.

Is there one player left on the roster who was there when Burke took over? I don't think there is.

I'm fricken scared as sh**. In the end feaster isn't one hundred percent calling the shots. Feaster is part of a team and Burke will have large imput. I have really liked the way things have been going recently. I hope Burke accepts that this is the type of rebuild that will take a long time to do rather then do something stupid and try to fast track it. Burke is a very risky guy. I think there might have been some safer options but only time will tell

But when he took over, the Leafs were worse off than the current Flames.
- Jeffmt

I would agree with this.

However.

The difference of suck between the 2008 Leafs and the 2013 Flames is far too small to have any real difference in time line.

The flames are, without any shadow of a doubt, considered to be one of the worst team in the NHL right now.

Your five year rebuild may be only 4 years.

Still good news. I think its a great addition to Calgary. But don't start planning the parade for a few more years.

And to the Toronto fan saying Burke really didn't screw up by overpaying for Kessle and that the Leafs didn't over achieve...

Only time will tell, but the reality of the situation is more bad than good.

You're right, it's hard to say either of those teams is/was that much worse than the other. He's definitely working with a much better prospect pool than he inherited in Toronto though.

That's El Presidente to you Colin!

Glad to see Burkie is back in the game. And to the Flames as well, awesome.

First step. You need a puck-moving d-man! Burke likes re-acquiring his former comrads. JML for a stinky AHL player and a 5th

Good luck with everything, should be a fun ride. Calgary really is Toronto West now

We should of did a hockeybuzz road trip and argued the whole way there.

Think we could've filled it?

- Lahey

Imagine taking that thing through the Roger's Pass??? hahaha

Would be a good trip though!

I always compared the 08-09 leafs to calgary now (well before this offseason anyways, when the flames got monahan). The flames have really no tradeable vets, didn't get enough for iginla, and were unable to move kipper (like the muskoka 5). Both franchises were in shambles. Burke was able to trade his way out of the mess in TO, and will have to do so in Calgary to avoid a very long rebuild. Here's hoping he succeeds.

Burke said that he will be involved with trades and signings. What do you think him having input into those things mean?

He also said that he was going to review every prospect, player and the way they draft. He said he has a clear vision for the team and is pretty sure that Feaster see's it the same way. Sounded to me that Feaster better see it the same way.

They can give Burke any title they want but he is going to be more hands on than its lead to believe. Sure Feaster is going to have input and do the talking to the media but Burke is just as involved.

Also if Feaster and Burke do not see eye to eye on a transaction who do you think KK and Edwards are going to have more trust in?

The only way i see this working out is if Feaster says yes to most things that Burke wants.

Almost everything you said was your own conjecture and directly disputed by what they were saying at the presser. I understand that it's trendy to act like we understand the business but I can say for a fact that I don't know a half of it and I doubt you do either. For now, I will believe what they said until shown otherwise.
