For a leafs team that missed the playoffs for 7 years that was a successful season. You can argue all you want but success is relative to the situation.

It was a lockout shortened season, not a full 82 game schedule and you weren't playing any Western teams, I wouldn't call it a success unless you repeat this year playing a balanced schedule against all 29 other teams.
