Mike Augello: So Much For Silence

TSN’s Bob McKenzie reports that Kadri is looking for a long term deal similar to the Islanders John Tavares(who was selected six picks ahead of him in the 2009 Draft), for six years at around $5.5 Million per season.

- mikeinbuffalo

Here's a better idea: let's just trade Kadri straight up for Tavares.

After all, Kadri thinks he's comparable, right? So, I'm sure neither team would object to an one-for-one swap.

Nazem needs to lay off the dope and the Xbox.

You gonna be alright with it if all the Leaf players party every night and show up to work hungover? Cuz that happens at tons of workplaces.
- golfingsince

It happens already in the sport. We just don't hear about it often. Let's not kid ourselves. Young guys making tons of money...you know drugs, booze and women are not in short supply for many of these guys.

You're talking about work now though. Im talking away from work. They are still expected to show up for work and give 100%. They collect a full check, their employers expect full effort and production. If a guy wants to be an assole off the ice, I couldnt care less. Nor should anyone else who hasn't, and likely will not, meet them

They are also expected to conduct themselves like NHL players.

That carries weight off the ice too.

Thanks tips. Who would have thought NHL players would be expected to act like NHL players when they show up for work.

It carries little weight off the ice, in terms of a debt to society though. Anything they contribute is a bonus, and many of them do a lot as it is.

I can go out for drinks at night and show up in the morning and still give 100%. I just won't be as effective. Fairly or not, some occupations are more in the public eye than others. Most people couldn't give a damn if they see their butcher or baker out late at night before a shift but feel completely different if it's their doctor or child's schoolteacher.

I agree. And since this is entertainment and a sport, who cares about what these guys do off the ice. Being in the public eye will get them more attention, good and/or bad, but thats up to them to act according to how they wish to be seen by the public. We're shifting from a debt to society to peoples perceptions, veering off topic now.

Conduct themselves as NHL players off the ice.

Lots of teams require their players to do a lot more than simply play hockey. They are role models and they have to attend public events, visit hospitals, play a part in the community.

Perception dictates how much they owes us doesn't it? If those (frank)ers are hungover shouldn't they refund my ticket?

Yeah and they have to sacrifice anonymity and are held to higher standards than the average 20 year old idiots who drink till they puke and get in fights.

Radulov and Tithead suspended in the playoffs for acting like idiots off the ice.

They didn't act like NHL players off the ice.

Thats an employer/employee issue. They didn't come to work prepared and were reprimanded. It wasn't because the team felt they didn't pay their debt to society.

You've been saying how it doesn't matter what they do off the ice, it's their choice.

Just giving you an example that it's not.

They don't have jobs as athletes without fans.

Terms of employment has a lot to do with keeping fans happy and getting new ones. It's a lot easier to do when people don't think you're a cocky Richard

I meant that in terms of what they owe fans when they aren't performing within the confines of their contractual obiligations.

Nobody has a job without customers. Keeping the fans happy is the teams job, winning hockey games is the players job. They sort of go hand in hand, but Kadri isn't crossing any lines or doing anything unjust by not signing the contract fans want him to sign.

While a lot of Leaf fans are annoyed with his attitude/demands, we all want him on the team, that hasn't changed. It's all about talent. You got it, and deliver, fans will want you around. That's really all that should matter to us, as fans. What these guys do on the ice. What these guys do off the ice their business, and if it impacts their on ice performance, then it becomes their employers business too.

Bozak seems like a great guy. Kadri seems like a douche. Guess which one Leaf nation would rather have on their team? Winning and talent draws fans, not smiles and handshakes.

You might have a point if there was even a remote possiblity of the NHL losing a significant number of fans.

In terms of overall fan base(s), the league didn't feel a thing after the lockout.

I'm making a much bigger point than Kadri's contract.

But I think he would benefit from not pissing off his own fans
