That's a pretty pessimistic way to look at them...

He's not being pessimistic, he said he loved it!

*waits for the inevitable debate about the validity of using advanced stats to prove our defense will/won't be good this year*

I can, as long as we draw the most as well.

Matching Roughing minors are fine.

It's the stupid, lazy hooking penalties that drive me nuts.

The Flyers are still generally in the top 4 or 5 teams in terms of PP opportunities over the last 5 years, too...it's not all matching minors, they take a ton of penalties, but they also draw a ton.

In the NHL, maybe. But we're nowhere near the Yankess/BoSox. My 2 least favorite baseball teams.

As the team matures I hope they can cut down on their own penalties. We have a ton of guys that can draw penalties quite well. Hartnell is at the point where he will always take a dumb penalty every so often. That's a given. But Briere leaving will cut down on a lot of them. I see both Rinaldo and Simmonds maturing and playing smarter moving forward. Both have taken some really boneheaded penalties in the past.

The penalties that worry me the most are our D men getting blown by and resorting to tackling, tripping, hooking etc. That happened wayyyyyyy too often last year with Kimmo and Coburn as the main offenders. They've got to set a better example.

Very much a chance, especially if they do end up signing Gagne.

Laviolette, Holmgren, and Luukko all talked up Meszaros at the Town Hall. Of course, nothing any of them says in public actually means anything, as we all well know. But there's nothing they've said or done that makes it seem they've given up on, feel negatively toward Meszaros. And that would mean something, I think.

The GM did say that if he didn't look ready to play a full season in camp he'd be going back because even 1 game in the NHL meant a year off the contract. I got the sense he was unlikely to be a Flyer this year.

Besides he did say this in July

"I'm just trying to work on my offensive game all the time," said Laughton, a hardworking, cerebral player. "I think my defense kind of takes care of itself, so I just have to develop those little skills, and this camp helps out, too. I feel pretty confident right now with my game."

Hard to do that if they have him on the 4th line should he make the roster.

Mike Richards played his entire first season on the 4th line, so it's far from impossible that a talented player can't contribute on the 4th line.

Have to look at the entire picture. Timonen has lost a step, that is inevitable as he gets older. That has led to some penalties. But the lack of team defense doesn't help the defenseman. I'm not absolving them of any blame. But always looking at what a defenseman is forced to do, is like blaming the safety for not making a touchdown saving tackle after the opposition running back rambled past the entire defense for a long TD run. It happened way too often last year because the Flyers team defense, as a whole, stunk. And it starts with the forwards and the style of play that they play. Constant odd man rushes against will make a defenseman look bad.

A lot of things can be worked on in practice. I'm very much in favor of Laughton making the team if he looks ready.

Agreed. No reason why Laughton can't follow in the same path.
