Would also be plenty rested for when the first injury happens in the third week of October.

No, first preseason game. Ruptured spleen for, oh, let's say Adam Hall

I honestly don't see it as a big deal. The Flyers had the third best PP in the NHL last year, and the bulk of the damage was done by the top unit. Adding Streit as a QB when Giroux/Timonen/Voracek aren't out there could strengthen that 2nd unit and make both units very dangerous.
- Jsaquella

The first unit PP normally starts most of the PP's when the faceoff is in the offensive zone. The 2nd unit PP frequently comes on the ice with well under a minute left, and after the 1st unit has changed after a clear by the opposition. If there was a figure for PP zone setup time between the 1st unit and 2nd unit, I bet there would be a drastic difference in zone time. I'd maximize Streit's skill set as much as possible. I'd play him on both units if his fitness level would allow it.

a. Could we resign Matt Walker,? I'm not sure what position he played (rover, maybe?).
b. We could trade for Mike Green and convert him into a defenseman.
c. Bring back Sami Kapanen.
d. Sign Zherdev to...never mind, that's silly.

Then Streit's ability as an adept outlet passer can be utilized when the 2nd unit starts moving up the ice after a clear.

We all know Laviolette will juggle at times, and that Streit will see time on both units.

Jay Rosehill

http://www.hockeysfuture....m/prospects/jay_rosehill/

Rosehill’s greatest assets are his size, strength and punishing physical style. He is never one to back down from challenge and delivers bone-jarring hits as often as the opportunities present themselves. He’s a solid defensive defenseman that progressed quite nicely over the course of his freshman campaign.

My guess is one of 2 things will happen. Either Mez will remain healthy thru preseason and he will be traded, or he will get injured and go on IR.

Today's top ten list:

The Top 10 Flyers games that I have attended.

For suspense reasons, I will start with #10 and work my way up!

10. 12/8/87 vs Boston: This game made the list for one reason only; Ron Hextall became the 1st NHL goalie to score by actually shooting the puck into an empty net. It was one of the coolest moments I ever witnessed at a Flyers game. While I can’t remember the final score, I will never forget that moment.

9. 2004 Game 5, 1st round vs. New Jersey: The Flyers eliminate the Devils! Finally after years of frustration, the Flyers beat the Devils and move on to the 2nd round. Great game and an even greater feeling seeing the Devils go down!

8. 3/05/04 The Brawl vs Ottawa: As I told my wife that night, this is what it was like in the 70s and early 80s. It was old school mayhem and I enjoyed every moment of it!

7. 12/20/79 vs Pittsburgh: A tight checking 1-1 tie, this game was extremely special for one reason: it was the Flyers 28th game in a row without a loss and it tied the all-time NHL record. The Streak would eventually reach 35 before ending in a 7-1 blowout loss in Minnesota. The atmosphere that night was electric; it felt like a playoff game.

6. November of 1985 vs Edmonton: Perhaps the most emotional game I ever attended; it was the first game played after the death of Pelle Lindbergh. I still have the ticket with Pelle’s picture that was marked but not torn. Rookie goalie Darrin Jensen was great that night as the Flyers defeated the Oilers.

5. 1987 Game 7, division finals vs the Islanders: Dave Poulin straps on a flak jacket over his broken ribs and leads the Flyers to victory over the Islanders. The minute Poulin hit the ice for warm-up, the ovation began as it was an amazing act of courage and leadership.

4. 4/1985 Game 6, conference finals vs Quebec: The Flyers eliminate the Nordiques and move onto the Stanley Cup Finals. Captain Dave Poulin electrifies the crowd scoring a huge goal while 2 men short. You could actually see the Nordiques just pack it in after that goal. The roar that followed that goal was deafening.

3. 5/2004 Game 6, Conference finals vs Tampa Bay: Keith Primeau continued his Superman impression that night leading the Flyers to an emotional win over Tampa. Primeau was simply unstoppable that evening as he led the Flyers with 2 goals and 4 points on their way to an amazing 5-4 OT win.

2. January of 1976, the Flyers defeat the Soviet Red Army Team: Wow what a game! From Van Impe’s huge hit, to the Soviet walk out, to Joe Watson’s goal which Fred Shero joked had set back Russian hockey 50 years, it was a game for the ages. For one glorious afternoon, the entire NHL was pulling for the Flyers, as no one had yet been able to beat the Red Army club. The Flyers out hustled, out hit, and out played the Soviets all over the ice in a 4-1 victory which was not as close as the score would indicate.

and finally at #1…

1. May 1987, Game 6 of the Stanley Cup finals vs Edmonton. The Flyers go down 2-0 and are out shot 15-5 in the first, at this point I really figured the season was over. However Lindsay Carson scores a huge goal in the 2nd, and folks we have a game. The 3rd period is where the fun really started! Brian Propp scores a huge goal to tie it up and just one minute later, seldom used defenseman J.J. Daigneault scores the game winner. The roar from the crowd after Daigneault’s goal was so loud, I thought the roof was going to once again come off the Spectrum. Ron Hextall and Mark Howe were brilliant down the stretch as the Flyers held on to win 3-2.

Where it makes sense is it potentially turns what was a bit of a weak spot into a strength without weakening an already strong spot. I also get the argument to use him on the first unit, while either sliding Timonen to the 2nd unit or perhaps one of the wingers on the first unit being replaced with Voracek, and then being used on the second unit.

Doesn't necessarily mean that it's the best idea, or that I agree with it. My preference is to not use forwards on the point, if at all possible, so that should tell you where I'd use Streit. But I can also see the benefits in using him on the 2nd unit.

I just don't see it taking full advantage of Streit. Streit should lead the team in PP icetime per game, along with Giroux. I don't see that happening if he's not on the first unit. His PP icetime should be well over 3 minutes a game, instead of around 2 minutes a game that it would be, if he's on the 2nd unit PP. Hopefully Laviolette will adjust and maximize Streit's ability in that area. I'd move Simmonds to the 2nd PP unit. I just don't feel that the 2nd unit get's enough time or is used in the best of situations. And that's just not the Flyers, it's normaly that way. Big situation in a game, needing a goal on the PP to tie, or go ahead. I want Streit out on the ice.

Not many people talk about it, but maybe 30 seconds before the Van Impe hit, there is a severely vicious elbow by Bill Barber. He has the puck along the near boards and a Russian comes over to check hit and Barber absolutely decks him with a mean, hard elbow right to the face and sends the guy sprawling. To me, it's a much, much harder shot than the Van Impe one.

great list. i was at 3 of these myself - all from 2004 - and witnessed the others on tv except for the soviet and pens games. the 2003-04 team is my second favorite team all-time (i didn't become a flyers fan until the winter of 1980, so i can't count the cup teams). great ride that year, and those were 3 special games.

the lindbergh memorial game was on november 14th, if memory serves.

i like to remind people that the lindsay carson goal from the 87 final was off a sweet cross ice feed from dave brown. one of - in not the very best moments from the broadcast was during the very last sequence of the game when messier snared hextall's clearing attempt near the blueline and forced him to make a dramatic save - gene hart nearly has a heart attack...he was so in the moment. still gives me chills, smiles, and tears every time i see it. i'm still amused by kjell samuellson's celebration after - as if it were no big deal, but everyone in the building should be thanking him because he won the game for them. just kills me.

greatest game for me ever, was game 6 against tampa. the other, not on your list, was when the flyers dispatched the habs to advance to the finals, which i got to share with my brother. game 6 was of that 2010 was almost another one to add to the list. OT wins against washington in 2008 and new jersey in 2010 were up there too.

I don't want Streit killing penalties either. But it doesn't make sense to me to sign a player like Streit, who is an offensive/PP specialist defenseman, and not play him on the 1st PP unit to maximize his skill set. He has the best point shot on the team.
- MJL

And Kimmo could do with the extra rest that would come from only playing on the second PP unit.

The way the 2nd PP unit played last year, he certainly wouldn't be exerting himself during any goal celebrations.

In my opinion Timonen would still be on the 1st PP unit along with Streit.
