I am all for slapping a C on Smyth as long as you slap 3 other letters after it. I agree that Smyth was Blue and Copper in the past but he has a real attitude. Throwing a fit when he was a healthy scratch last year. We need a captain that can be a role model and motivate. You don't see Smyth taking the hits or bridging the gap between our 22 year olds and our 30 year olds.

I am sorry, if what they say is true Gagner is the one with heart right now. He has played enough games to get the respect of the veterans yet he is young enough to relate to the young guys. He lives with 2 other players. I am not saying throw the C on him but give the guy an A. Smid must be doing something wrong to not have an A already but on paper he would look like a choice. I would say at this point you throw an A on Hemsky to motivate him after you just humiliated him. You need the guy to start the season as a top 6 player, maybe he will keep that spot. Then you give an A to Eberle because you need to acknowledge your point leader, plus it might take some of the pressure off him if he knows the team already believes in him. Then an A to Hall because he looks to be the future.

Proceed to rotate a C and two A's amongst those 4. Who says you need to have just 1 captain. Other teams have done it and it has worked well. Then when Hemsky is gone Schultz or Petry should be ready.

I honestly think smyth was one of the better leaders on the oilers. Ive always wanted to see horcoff shipped out or bought out so he can be captain, but after he has been scratched and is not looking the same out there anymore, i dont think the spark is there anymore. Maybe the "C" will give him a spark but thats a big responsibility. Smyth is a soldier out there, hard working guy but after last year... all downhill unless he bounces back. Remember 1 bad year isn't that bad and i hope he bounces back. If you look at previous 4-5 years he has been scoring at least close to 20 goals+ 45-60 pt guy. After a TERRIBLE season, i think he has something to prove, his leadership though is there, and i hate how the oilers scratched him last year, your team is already bad as it is, scratching a veteran to put some plug in wont help. Im pretty sure the message was sent after at least 1 game he was benched which was needed, and surely is needed for players who dont produce including leaf players.

I honestly think Smyth should be captain, but the only other guy for the job id give it to is Hall. Hall is young, there is no rush to make him captain, so id definitely give it to Smyth in his final year, give him a confidence boost by giving him the "C" , hope he has a good season and nets 20 goals again, and then he can be resigned by the oilers if he can still compete

Remember Grabo for the leafs had a poop season, he will bounce back this year surely, same goes to smyth

The worst part with the Grabo buyout is that "oh one bad season give him the boot" while they're like "oh Bolland had a bad offensive year getting to play with Pat Kane and Sharp for 30some games but he can turn it around here for sure"
