It was like a 5 game winning streak where the Oilers outscored their opposition like 20something to 6, wasn't it?

I remember telling Laughs how (frank)ed the Oilers were because they spent the rest of their seasons goals in one place and they actually did.

Seriously, Ryan Smyth used to be one of my favourite players in the league as recently as about 4-5 years ago. He played a style of hockey that I really enjoyed watching and coupled with the passion that he had for his team??...he was awesome to watch! He is the one who should have been Captain of the Oilers back in the day. It is a bummer to see him grasp at straws and attempt to remain relevant, but alas, I'm afraid that Father Time has caught up with him and as one poster said earlier...he is but a shell of his former self.
If giving him the Captaincy at this juncture in time is nothing more than a token gesture, then why bother? I'm sure he is Oil enough to realize that the kids are the now and the future, and the sooner the reigns are passed to one of them, the better. This team NEEDS to take some huge steps FORWARD this season...and providing them with the opportunity to forge their new identity under the guidance of a leadership group that will be here for the foreseeable future is nothing but a good thing.

People act like he's a hero and as if he has played hockey for the love of the sport... BS! I say he played hockey for the love of the almighty dollar! Remember, this is the guy who left the Oilers for a mere 100k.

Giving Smyth a "C" at this point would mean the Oilers are continuing to do the same mistakes over and over again... Forget the past! Give the "C" to Gagner or Eberle.
