Sorry, but that would be the worst mistake the Oilers could ever make.
Smyth is history, he's brutal now & would not lead by any example that would help this team on or off the ice.
This is Hall & Eberle's team now, not Smyth so why in the hell would they want to remain in the past when the future is what counts.
I don't care what Smyth has done for the Oilers in the past, he shouldn't even be playing this year let alone getting the captaincy.
All he's doing is wasting a roster spot for a younger player who would play IF management & coaches would simply have some balls & tell Smitty your playing career with us is OVER!! - newmy
I heard the Oilers are bringing back Bobby Schmautz. |

Everyones ripping on him, saying hes not the same anymore, like really? One bad half season and everyone goes crazy. Like leafs management with grabo, oh hes poop, he had a bad season blah blah blah. So if grabo put up 30+ pts this half season and 15-20 goals, pretty sure would put Nonis in a tough spot. How would Nonis have bought grabo out then? Buying out a guy who produced? Guarantee now grabo has a good season and nets 50-60 pts again, 20-25 goals.
Same goes with smyth, hope he bounces back and nets 20 goals again, 40-50 pts(if given minutes) - Mapleleafs_91
Smyth has been in constant decline for a few years. He was doing it in LA over his final year or 2. He had a strong start back in Edm, then bottomed out after Xmas in his first year and never recovered.
And that becomes his MO. Strong start and in teh new year he fades away, well the season started in the new year and he never got his game going. There is a strong possibility that he will be a healthy scratch during the season. Not where the "C" should be.
Put it on Gagner if Hall is considered too young. Sam is skilled enough that the "skill" guys respect him, and he is good friends with those guys. He is also a hard worker so he has the right attitude. He is loyal to the team and just wants to play in Edm. He is also willing to take a face pounding for his mates. Pure win with him.

It gives a year for Hall to mature a bit more. He works his bag off, the only problem is how many games will he be in the press box this year. Its not a bad idea for a buffer between the next captain though. It would be nice if he could have the C in his final year. - doon
The guy takes lazy hooking penalties all the time, that's not working your bag off.

To me that just says the team thinks that there is no "Leaders".
Let the team players decide if the team management/coaches don't |

Like Hall said last week, it's just a letter, really leaders are going to lead regardless. |

I think he would be a good captain, the only problem is the amount of time he will be in the press box. Its only a year, whats wrong with the club giving him a swan song? It would be looked at as a classy move by the club, and im sure the players wouldnt have a problem with it. |

and that, right there, is a great indicator of why he (Hall) should be one of the frontrunners for the position. |

He got his swan song when we traded for him and then gave him a 2 year deal. |

But "its just a letter, really leaders are going to lead regardless". I dont think they give it to him, but I also dont think it would be as terrible as some people think. |

[quote=getoffthepipe I am officially done with HockeyBuzz after this post. Stop trying so hard to be cool and quirky. And learn a thing or two about the team you are now blogging about. Make a guy who could barely skate/play....was a healthy scratch....whined all season and showed no leadership qualities whatsoever... and comes from the same old culture of losing being acceptable... our captain?!!!!!!!!!
Get real.
Have a good one. |

So you made an account to say this? Ya, that's probably one of the dumbest things I've saw on hockeybuzz in a real long time.
And a lot of dumb shut goes down on this site. |

Captain Canada, what more need be said?
You don't get a name like that without being deserving, and everyone who knows anything about hockey knows that moniker.
He's a great leader, he came home, give him the C.
Then, I can buy what I keep swearing, will be my last $300.00 NHL jersey! |

This guy... RT @dchesnokov: Alexander Radulov stripped of KHL CSKA's captaincy due to "problems with discipline," according to GM Fedorov.
