I didn't mind both for the simple fact that it was good relevant discussion. Not Toronto is doomed, Calgary sucks and Toni Rajala is going to score 50 goals.

I just don't see why he'd want to stick around. It really has nothing to do with how he's been perceived as of late either.

The guy is 31, has fought injuries and has never won a cup before. Regardless of the name on the back of the sweater that is 3 things that leads me to believe he won't stick around. If he does then you slap that C on his chest.

I don't agree with him doing well the first few makes equals him wanting to stay. He is a pro after all and I don't think he'd just mail it in. Even if he was a jackass that wanted out he has too much to lose by mailing it in.

I'm jumping into the conversation late, so this might have been said, but I totally see Cammi as the captain if he committed to sticking around for the rebuild. Although people say he is selfish, I have also heard that he is a bit of a fitness nut, and trains really hard (haven't we all seen the commercials ). I think in Feaster's reply to Colin, he stated the importance of having guys around that can be good examples i.e. prepare for games, and stay in shape. That comment also goes along with Hartley’being a demanding coach especially with fitness and preparation; I believe that Cammi will be around next season, and it will be up to him if he wants to be the captain and stay longer.

It's true. It is possible he accepts the role as mentor and sticks around. He is still only 31 so he could hang here for 3-4 years and they move on to try and win a cup later on if things here aren't that far along yet. It's all up to him but I agree with you, I think he has that role in him.

If he signs an extension I'd have to think he'd be a decent candidate. Unless of course the reason he signed was because it was a 7 year 7mil per year deal.

Ya I don't necessarily believe if he plays good that means he wants to say. But I think the coaches will be able to tell with his attitude pretty easily.

IMO it can go three ways:

1. He actually enjoys being around the kids, being a leader, embraces his role, and plays well.

2. Doesn't want to be a part of the rebuild, but continues on as a professional, plays well, and quietly lobbies to be moved somewhere where he has a chance.

3. Completely mails it in, waits for a trade.

You have to think that the nagging injuries that he has had, played a big role in his play last year. I think, when healthy, he will be a leader for this team. At least until the trade deadline.

You're right Colin...there isn't a perfect blueprint for a rebuild, and no 2 are alike. I'd like to throw the Sens into the hat too. 2 years ago they were left for dead, now look at them.

That's why I always hate when people compare what is going on in Calgary right now to what has happened in Edmonton, because it's completely different.

At the end of the day it all comes down to the mix of players and attitude in the dressing room. There's no other explanation.....is Edmonton more talented than Ottawa? Probably. They have a lot more talent than a lot of teams, but they just haven't found the right mix yet. Who knows, it may never come either, no guarantees, and that goes for the Flames too!

I like your admiration for Ottawa! As a Sens fan, its refreshing to know that other hockey fans are seeing progress for the organization. But there is no one way to rebuild a team. That usually depends on two factors: (1) in house budget and salary caps and (2) management style. For Sens, Bryan Murray had no choice to use his staffing team to help him build a team around young players. I love young players like Eberle, Nugent H., Hall...

I just have one opposing view: Oilers do NOT have as much talent as Ottawa, that's why the two teams are in entirely different rankings. Jason Spezza, Ryan, Michalek, Karlsson, Anderson, Lehner all occupy positions for which talents are unmatched by oilers players. Hall might finally start to break close to a point per game... they have future stars (or even superstars), but not quite the same amount of talent as the Sens for the time being. I would also like to point out Methot as another star that is currently way underrated, Zibbanijad is just as promising as well.

However, I am not here to bash any team... that goes against my philosophy of commenting on blogs. I think Calgary can use some of their veterans, but younger players and good drafting will be key in helping the team rebuild. I like Cammy, but i think Calgary should use him to leverage a deal with someone who has better leadership. We all remember what Cammy did to MTL. Is that what Calgary is hoping to get out of a captain or veteran....someone who nearly abandons your team by saying there is a lack of talent? I would use Cammy to get someone like him, but bigger and with more leadership skills.

One constant is that every team who has rebuilt has at least three years of very bad hockey. The oilers were especially bad becaise of the vets around them were lazy and used to losing already with bad attitudes. Not because of the young guys, that is what needs to be avoided in every rebuild.

The Sens were only shaky for one year and a half...so that ain't true!

You're right, once you actually break down the rosters Ottawa is right in there. Probably more balanced as well, however Spezza was hurt last year, Ryan is wasn't there, Karlson hurt etc.

Anyways, at the end of the day my point was not to compare the talent on each team but to point out the on ice success is way more than merely talent. 2 years ago everyone picked the Sens to be in the dumpster of the eastern conference.

Like I said before, I think Cammy has gotten a bit of an unfair ride the past few months. Lots of rumours, he said/she said etc. I do agree though he probably will be gone by the TDL
