I agree completely there is no one way to rebuild. It drives me nuts when people say 'scorched Earth' is the only way to go.

People says the future is very bright for Florida but didn't we hear that same song with Horton, Weiss, Bouwmeester, Luongo and co.

In the end if you don't have an owner willing to spend money it doesn't matter how good your young players are.

Savvy management is really important. I think of some of the hate Detroit gets this off season about aging and how the need to rebuild.

They have solid drafting that yields not only solid replacement players but tradeable assets.

Think Detroit has the assets that they could've made a move for Bobby Ryan or Jay Bouwmeester. Combine that with lots of lower level depth and you can practically stay competitive indefinitely.

In a cap world star players become available. Detroit just missed out on Parise. These are core players that can be had. As long as there is a cap young cheap top 9 or top 6 D players will carry value.

In Torontos case people critique the prospect pool for lacking high end talent which is completely fair but to write off solid role players is silly. Matt Frattin was nothing too special but with a second brought in a goalie drafted top 10.

There are many ways to acquire core talent.

Insults don't help here guy. Perhaps you haven't articulated your thoughts well enough. Wd all get it, the isle have been rebhilding forever and clearly have the plan. Colin's article said that fans will disagree with what's the proper way to do it. Calm down and debate but maybe try to understand the other side.

Very true and and without solid management and good mid to later round drafting to insulate your core you can easily piss away your wunderkids best years and never become that elite team the Oilers fans crave so badly.

Not trying to dig at the Oil their young guns are exceptional but first overall picks alone are not enough.

What if we get 12 of them? Although in all fairness Eberle wasn't a first overall and neither was PRV who was used to get a top 6 proven player.

Then welcome to cap hell. Seriously though good hockey trade I like Perron. I know you guys wanted to add a bit more size. Clarkson (ugly contract aside) wouldve been perfect in your top 6. Either way I like Perrons grit.

Can't help but feel like maybe not this season but
PRV will excel in St Louis. Will that change your thoughts of the trade? Or are you more in line with Burkes style of thought if you got what you wanted good on the other side getting what they wanted.

I hope so dude

The good part about the Flames is that they already have some really good players in the system thanks to a couple a strong drafts since feaster took over. Sure the "official" rebuild started last season, but they aren't starting from scratch.

Not to mention they have youngish established guys like backlund (if he can ever stay healthy), glencross, brodie, giordano etc. Things aren't so bad IMO.

What gets me most excited is John Gillies. I read an article on him a few days ago and people think he could be a pretty big deal once he turns pro.

PRV wasn't exactly bad here either, problem is he is more suited for 3LW and when there is a chance to get a proven 2LW you do it. There is a chance PRV ends up being a 2LW and a better player, but it was time to start getting proven players and stop banking on so much potential
