Two first line centres of approximate age and NHL tenure. How are we expected to make that comparison? - 1979AD

1. What's wrong with the word getting?
2. Maybe I just look for different things in a captain. And again, it's my opinion, we don;t have to agree. - sambarugh
Yeah, ya know, things other than winning........like losing? Is that what u look for in ur Captains? |

Seriously, do you value the strong leader, 2-way player with better than average offensive skills to build your team around, or the pure scoring machine?
It's really a fair comparison. Why you can't get that is mind-boggling. |

a fair comparison would be comparing two similar players.. ie two 2-way players
otherwise it becomes an argument about - as you put it - what type of player individual posters "value" more. |

It actually is exactly that. From the blog which spawned these comments:
"We're going to ask you, the readers, to make a one-or-the-other choice: If you were starting an NHL team and somehow found yourself the choice between either Toews or Stamkos as your first signing -- passing up the other one in the process -- which one would you with? Would you go for Stamkos' prolific scoring? Or would you go for Toews' somewhat more well-rounded game?" |

hence why i feel the argument is essentially a circle jerk
its not comparing players. its comparing styles - and which one posters think is more valuable.
why even mention Toews or Stamkos? The argument is two-way leader vs elite goal scorer.
you see my point? |

I don't mind it... I look at it from a value perspective, and if I were a GM would I trade one for the other etc etc. I don't care about positions (that's what she said) or stuff like that. |

Yes, I get that. But the level at which each player plays is also a factor. Eg. If you were forced to choose between Stamkos and a 1st line 2-way C like Bergeron or O'Reilly or Bozak, it becomes a much easier decision, doesn't it? (Bozak wins hands down)
No matter what the player's style of play, they all have a chance of ultimately being compared against everyone else. Some people say Gretzky is the best forward of all time, others will tell you it's Gordie. |

The better question is, who would you prefer (in their prime), Toews or Datsyuk |

If this blog was about comparing 2-way C's that would definitely be a much better comparison. |

We all have to remember a few things:
1. The question is who do you choose to build a team around. When I build a team, I want to win the cup, not just score goals and concede just as many.
Pick: Toews, he who has won. Won everywhere.
2. Toews offense is very, very underrated. His game is so complete, that he always makes sure he is playing a 2-way game so that the other team
Doesn't have a chance to score that he sacrifices his offense. Like I said, Toews has great offensive skills.
Pick: Toews
