1. No, it's just knowing how the Interwebs work and you can tell by the response that obviously the individual already diagrees with the statement. Therefore that opinion won't change.
2. Just my opinion. I know a lot of people like getting all high on him. Personally speaking he doesn't do anything that I would call captain worthy. - sambarugh

False, Tavares and Crosby have both been drafted in that ten year span with similar roles and intangibles - mighty13duck
Umm, no. Not false.
Tavares has a long way to go to prove the intangible part (where's his Smythe, his Selke?) , but I grant that he might. There are many in hockey who think Toews is a the superior captain to Sidney. Sorry, true.Is it open to debate? Sure. All I know is Toews didn't cry against the Bruins.
Again, Crosby, Tavares and Stamkos might put up more points, none have won quite like Toews has. maybe Sidney but Toews has one more Cup.

First of all, Kurri was the best two-way player on the Oilers. Sather said he might well have been their most complete forward. I'm not sure Stamkos' game measures up.
But also, what's your comparison based upon? Goal-scoring? Because Gretzky was the league's pre-eminent goal scorer until 1986. And while he hasn't (and let's be honest, won't) dominate the rest of the league to the degree that Gretzky did, the fact remains that Stamos scoring 60 goals in the NHL as it exists today, is every bit as impressive as Gretzky scoring 70+ goals in the early to mid '80s. - oniremosewa

I'll say it again, Datsyuk is really the guy i compare with Toews. Crosby is a great player though. Tavares has a ton of upside.

Maybe I misunderstood I thought you meant Toews has been the best player in the past ten years. (Hence generational talent part) |

Best player of his type. Two-way, physical center/leader. Arguably, arguably, yes
Is Tavares as good defensively as Toews? Dunno. Toews has a much longer track record and more hardware. Is he as physical? No. Has he won at every level like Toews has? Not yet. |

Tough question!
Recalling a recent blog that showed Toews was 2nd in the league in even strength goals over the past 2 seasons even though he had less even strength ice time than anyone else on the list, Toews wins. If I recall, Stamkos had 55 in 2100mns, while Toews had 39 in 1500mns. Add the leadership, defensive play, and other intangibles, Toews wins. |

Right, because a QB has never been traded for a WR. You would have to compare the two players in order to make that trade, which would apparently be stupid. |

The worst opinion in the history of mankind. Bar none. I mean, you gotta try awfully hard to be that wrong about something. Unfathomable. |

and in that case, it has more to do with the specific needs of the team
comparing them without that context, is, like I said, stupid |

I'll take it further:
Bergeron
Datsyuk
Kesler
Richards
Only one of those guys has done what Toews has: Datsyuk, and he is a generational player, as is Toews, generational meaning a guy who only comes along once every 10-20 years as far as his type of player and ability in that role. - John Jaeckel
I can take it even further JJ. Everyone that you mentioned has a legit number 2 behind them. Or is some cases a number 1. Toews doesn't. |

Right, and the premise of the comparison laid out by the blogger is you're starting a n NHL team from scratch and you can choose Stamkos or Toews. The specific need of your team is choosing a #1C. Which do you choose? |

I put this to you:
When Babcock said "whoever's playing with Toews" What do you think that meant? What do you think that means to a hockey team?
Do you not see any connection to the success Toews has had at every level?
Just asking.
And why does that kind of praise not at least put him in a generational conversation? Please don't talk about points. Because that is not what that quote is really about. |

Two first line centres of approximate age and NHL tenure. How are we expected to make that comparison? |

3 Lady Bing
1 Ted Lindsay
1 Hart

Sorry dude, but really?!
1) "getting"?!
2) You aren't serious? Are you going by some kind of stupid, over the top filler by the NBC team in a few playoff games (on the way to his second Cup in 4 years)? Because aside from showing a little too much passion/frustration in that instance, ALL THE GUY DOES is captain worthy. - John Jaeckel
1. What's wrong with the word getting?
2. Maybe I just look for different things in a captain. And again, it's my opinion, we don;t have to agree. |
