Stamkos is arguably the best sniper in the league.

Toews is a great two way player, leader, and proven winner.

I would take either of them on the Leafs in a heartbeat. People always poo-poo on Kessel because he is a one dimensional scorer - I would argue the same for Stamkos. My pick is Toews.

Nice Beatle reference, Phil. I crunched the numbers from Todd's blog yesterday because I was curious. Dividing total goals by total minutes, Stamkos scores roughly 0.02279 goals per minute of ice time, Toews scores roughly 0.02552 goals per minute, which is higher, but not significantly enough to account for an additional goal. If Toews had played an equal number of minutes to Stamkos, he would have also scored 55 goals. So in goal-scoring prowess, I think it's fair to say that they're about equal, given the huge disparity in ice time. That being said, I'd take Toews in a heartbeat for the additional defensive skills, better FO% and leadership qualities.

EDIT - Plus I'm a homer, but the numbers still support it.

Stamkos is a scoring machine, definitely has the offensive edge. Toews is a beast in all aspects and hasn't "had" to be the guy putting the puck in the net. And Babcock also called him the best Ayer at the Olympics. To build a team around, I say Toews.

No, it was stated that Toews shuts Stamkos down to which I responded with that comment. I was split 49-51 in favor of Stamkos. I'm happy you love him, Chicago is an awesome (frank)ing team, with awesome coaches and awesome management.

Go back and reread what was actually posted, not what you think was posted.

I stated:

Head to head, I think Toews could shutdown Stamkos. Stamkos would have no chance of shutting down Toews. I'd pick Toews, am I biased ... probably that too.

Lol so you pass over the better player for a better "leader?" 1) Kane, Keith, Sharp, Seabrook, etc. are winners because they played with Toews. 2) Stamkos on CHI is just as good a "leader" and just as much a winner.
- isles10289

1) Fixed. Might seem hyperbolic but . . . what did Mike Babcock say when asked who his best forward was on the 2010 Team Canada Olympic Team? "Whoever's playing with Toews."

Think about that.

2) Nothing against Stamkos, but in saying this you seem to belie that you don't really know much about Towws and what he brings to a team, or you don't place enough value on real leadership.

Toews is maybe the best captain in hockey. And that does mean something. Or they would give the C to any clown on the team.

Is that why 2 of Stamkos' 5 hat tricks are against Chicago?
- Artyukhin76

Is this fact? Haha, thats pretty crazy if it is, Stamkos is a beast but like one of the Toronto fans said, what does he do besides score? If he doesnt score 50-60 goals then what is he doing for your team?

Right, but it's also only 5v5 goals, so the numbers are equitable, and most statisticians believe that 5v5 stats are more indicative of skill than 5v4 numbers, although it would be interesting to do an overall side-by-side analysis of the two players.

They played eachother, in two different games Stamkos beat you goalie like a $2 hooker. Where was Toews?

STamkos. Trade places with the players and TBL still misses the playoffs and Chicago still wins the cup. Chi is a great team with or without Toews. Stamkos is the better player and its not as close as some think

Rookie year and 60 goal year. He's not Toews when it comes to the defensive side of the puck, but he's no slouch either.

Stamkos is the best young bonifide sniper in the league... But I can't imagine any circumstance where I would take a healthy Stamkos over a healthy Toews. His intangibles are off the charts.

Everyone is taking this to personal They both bring something a little different to the table but both are very effective and there probably is no wrong answer it all depends on your preference when building a team
