Defense, it does no good to score 60 goals a year if you end up giving up 61 haha. I'll admit i dont see enough of Stamkos' games to be able to bash him but generally what i have seen of his defense is nowhere near Toews' defensive abilities. As stated by pretty much everyone...both are great players
- BlazinMike

Stamkos is better offensively, Toews is better defensively. Toews is on a much better team. You cant use his cups as an argument lol.

He has scored 60 goals in a year once. Call me when he does it again.

Not a strong argument. No one wins two Cups without a great overall team. Not even Gretzky or Orr.

And there is an argument that Toews made all those guys better. If you want me to quote Babcock again, I will.

Stamkos has/had St. Louis and Lecavalier. I'd call that a pretty able supporting cast.
- mlindsay

For his points, yes. To win a cup? no. just 1 amazing line wont win you a cup.

Ok let's see........

TOEWS -

Scores goals
Assists
Top Faceoff Guy
Goes to the Front of the net
Best Captain
Excels at defence
Plays all 3 zones
On the ice no matter the situation: offence or defence
Power Play
Excels at Penalty Kills
Makes others around him better

Oh yeah, 2 cups and Conn Smythe

STAMKOS -

Scores goals

Yup, it's pretty close.

I actually like STAMKOS too, but yeah, I'm a Hawks fan so I must be homer.
Not because TOEWS excels at every facet of the hockey that you are coached at since you are a kid.

- robhawks

lol you are right. I forgot Stamkos isn't good on the power play. Sorry.

I only really am interested in other teams fans' opinions. Obviously all fans from both of these teams are gonna pick their own guys, with the exception of maybe a few people.

how can u say he is the best captain when ehs throwing temper tantrums in the penalty box DURING THE PLAY OFFS and his defenseman has to come settle him the (frank) down and tell him to chill out ??

i am not taking anything away from his game, this guy is a (frank)ing all star...he produces good points, he is devensively sound, and he is still young..

when arguing who you would rather have on your team :toews or stamkos, it is irrelevant to bring up stanley cup history, because that is what you win as a team....this argument is about who you would take as an individual..

whoever says "captained his team to 2 cups?" "thats all i need to hear!" ...

come on fella's...this is based on individual aspects and not about a cup.

theres no doubt in my mind toews will learn how to be one of the best captains, but imo he is not one yet...he is still young and learning how to react to every single situation

this guy mentiones " excels at defense" like 2-3 times in that list lol
throw in special teams and the list is full...

stamkos excels on the PP.
he excels at 5on5 more than toews does
he excels at goal scoring
he also makes people around him better, take alex killorn for example...stamkos gave tht guy so many good passes...
he is smart, he took advantage of everybody thinking he will shoot and makes the quick unexpected pass to the open man and boom..
and his defense is nothing poor, his defense is actually not bad..and it is only getting better

toews?
2 way guy

that is basically the same thing, reversed, from tampa's side

People also don't seem to realize how well of a passer Stamkos is.

The "what has Stamkos ever won" argument... If you want to call that an argument, is extremely silly.

2011-12 NHL - Maurice "Rocket" Richard (Goals Leader)
2011-12 NHL - Second All-Star Team
2011-12 NHL - Named to play in the NHL All-Star Game
2010-11 NHL - Second All-Star Team
2010-11 NHL - Named to play in the NHL All-Star Game
2009-10 NHL - Maurice "Rocket" Richard (Goals Leader)
2007-08 Canadian Major Junior - Top Draft Prospect
2007-08 Canadian Major Junior - First All-Star Team
2007-08 OHL - Top Draft Prospect Award
2007-08 OHL - Second All-Star Team

And if you're referring to Stanley Cups, that's a team achievement. Marcel Dionne and Peter Stastny never won a cup, and I'd take either of those guys over Toews any day of the week as well... Well when they played I mean.

Great analysis. Not a knock on Toews at all, but using his Stanley Cup wins isn't really a great argument for which player you would take on an expansion team. Why not just pick Dustin Brown first over both of them? He is also a great leader who brought his team a Stanley Cup. How many other elite goal scorers might you choose over Stammer? maybe Ovie? probably not though.

Yeah, it's definitely not a knock on Toews, as he is one of the league's best centers... I just do not understand how people can use Stanley Cups as an argument when comparing players. If Stamkos and Toews switched teams, Toews would have 0 cups right now, and Stamkos would have had two.

I agree 100%. Toews wouldn't bring us a Cup right away, and there is no way that team wouldn't have won both years they did with Stamkos in the place of Toews.

As of now (IMO) order of best players is Crosby Stamkos Malkin Tavares Ovi Toews. The last four are all very close. Crosby is far and away the best. (As much as I dislike him)

I think you may have hit the nail on the head in this order. My list would be very similar to yours. I MIGHT swap Ovi and JT, but I cant argue with either one of those guys in #4 and #5.

stamkos

GP 373 G 208 A 178 PTS 386 PIM 249

toews

GP 408 G 167 A 205 PTS 372 PIM 223

im taking stamkos. he will be the captain possibly this year if not when st. louis retires so he has the leadership. his two way play is much better. plays the PK a lot and PP. prob the best one timer in the game. finds a way to score. makes players around him better. toews has also had a much better team around him for his years and stammer still has more points in less games.

So he is alright at a few things. Getting better at a few things. Great at scoring.

Uhm ok.

Once again, Toews excels at every aspect of the game. STAMKOS, unfortunately does not. This isn't an opinion, Lightning fans say the same thing.

So youre going to base his entire captainship on one period in one playoff game of a series that he and his team ended up winning? Why is it automatically considered a bad thing that Toews blew up for ten minutes? Did his team not win the series? Did they not go on to win the Stanley Cup? Is it ALWAYS a bad thing when once every few seasons when the chips are stacked against your team, your captain wears his emotions on his sleeve? Let his team know that if theyre ever going to get serious the time is NOW!? I realize that there are greater ramifications of a Captain blowing up in a seemingly "must win game" but how is the notion of shaking things up REALLY HARD can never be considered a positive. How can it be determined that Toews loosing his cool is definitely a bad thing when they won three elimination games in a row, 8 of 9 and 11 of 14 ALL AFTER Toews threw this "temper tantrum" that no captain worth his salt would ever throw. I dont buy it. Desperate times call for desperate measures. I dont think Toews was consciously thinking 'hey, how about I take three penalties in a row here', but it definitely says a lot about his ability to captain a team that when he did, everyone else toed the line behind him and had his back.

okay, however many of those points weren't thrown in on Stamkos' side. its funny how you have assists on Toews' side but you don't have it on Stamkos' side. Even though Stamkos has had more assists than Toews each of the past 4 seasons?

1. Someone said before that their 5 on 5 numbers were the same taking into account time on 5 on 5.

2. STAMKOS excels at goal scoring. Ok that's cool.

3. Toews makes people around him much better. Don't take my word, ask Babcock, he might know something about hockey.

4. STAMKOS defense is nothing poor? Uhm ok, doesn't sound too positive.

5. Stamkos defense is getting better? Still not at Toews level.

Like I said, Stamkos fans are actually showing that Toews is more complete. That's hilarious. Do people read what they write.

One more time......

Toews excels at every hockey aspect.

STAMKOS is a great goal-scorer and is ok or getting better at other things.( This part wasn't even written by a Hawk fan, read previous)

Even though I'm a Hawk fan, I'm a hockey fan.

Last time I checked, getting more positive answers on a test is usually better than getting 1 or 2 positive answers.

Since when Is babcock the smartest Hockey guy in the world. It comes down to opinion who you think is more valuable to a team, but in terms on who is the bigger generational talent I think the edge goes to the 50 goal scorer who plays on a pretty bad team.
