this is the dumbest (frank)ing thing I've ever heard.

AT THE VERY LEAST RETAIN HIS RIGHTS!

If it's about contract limits, terminate Abney's contract! Dump N Schultz! Buyout Eager!

- TheNugeIsHuge

Don't pull a Cloutier. You can't terminate Abney's contract. It's a mutual termination. Abney isn't going to want his deal terminated.

I'll be waiting for an explanation from MacTavish, or at least a formal press release. What's the reasoning here? It seems like Rajala may have initiated this.

Bob Stauffer ‏@Bob_Stauffer 38m
A clarification. When a player goes on unconditional waivers like Rajala...usually it means a mutual termination of a contract not buy-out

Bob Stauffer ‏@Bob_Stauffer 1h
Rajala will almost surely have a deal in place in Europe...

It's disappointing to lose a prospect this way.

I never expected him to be much more than one of those guys that lingers around for 10 games a year for a bunch of years, but he leaves a hole in OKC now.

I'm curious if we sign someone else to play there now or make a trade? At least if this happened in July there were some real quality AHL guys to pick up. Not sure what is left at this point though.

Toni Rajala goes on waivers for purpose of buyout, Stauffer assuming a Europe deal is already in place. We lose his rights as well.

Yes. He was a RFA that left to work on his game while making money.

I think he could be a good addition to our 3rd line... Hope he's there someday.

I always thought (or at least hoped..) that he had the potential to turn into a 2nd or 3rd line winger, I like the way he plays. My guess is we see some sort of addition to OKC, it would make sense, but you never know.

A 22 year old that is 5'10" and 163lbs. So you envision the 2nd and 3rd line to get even smaller??? Sorry but was very unlikely the kid was going to ever stick in the NHL, like Lahey said , maybe a couple 10 game stints here and there, and even that is a stretch.

Won't be pissed if he stays in Europe. Will be pissed if he gets his out and then comes back to NA as an FA.

Oh well. In terms of disgruntled players abandoning the teams that drafted them, we're still in God's favour after Schultz picked us. Not much to complain about.

Although, now that Marco Roy and Anton Slepyshev are our top 2 forward prospects, we have reason to be extra furious that Tambs traded Reider for Kessy.

Yes and yes.

I wouldn't be shocked to see someone claim him. What's the harm in taking a shot at him in TC?

I don't think there was much room in Edmonton for him but yes, I see him having the skills to produce on a scoring line some day. Of course it's much less likely now, but maybe some day we see him come back with another NHL club. You never know.
