He had a few cups of coffee in Tampa... but couldn't stick on a team that desperately needs D

Vancouver 2.0

But for real, just split 50/50 till one gets hot or flat out proves he's the starter

- NoobasaurusRex

Except both our goalies are easy to move.

No. Riemer and Bernier are actually good.
- RogerRoeper

and younger, and didn't come to the leafs under the same circumstances, and didn't cost the same........ how could you not see the similarities?

Toskala and Rayvcroft never put up the numbers Bernier/Reimer did last season.

When Raycroft won 37 games, his save % was a pathetic .894.

Honestly, I could see him being the best bargain in the NHL this year after Couturier.

Bernier is a better goalie than James Reimer, flat out. He's had incredible numbers his whole career and has fewer injury question marks. I like Reimer, and he'll find a home as below average starter somewhere in the league... but JB will become a solid starter when given the opportunity this year as a Maple Leaf.
- PotvinFan

Huh? Reimer has had the better NHl career. Bernier has proven very little.

No they aren't, they'll be picking top 5 once again. They'll never be able to put it all together.

5-6 mill is his worth. Severely underrrated.
- systemtool

The consensus is Boumeester took less at 5.4 million, but his numbers are much worse.

OH FFS

STFU

If he would have done that last year , he wouldn't have been moved to the third line and lost the ice time he needed to put up the points required to justify 5.5MM !

Did I cover everything Big D ?

- .HOHO.

Carlyle stripped away the A before the season started. the writing was on the wall, read between the lines brother

the best goalie will play, if you are afraid of competition you are in the wrong job Remier
- nightmare3020

reimer, and no, I don't think hes afraid of competition at all...

do you forget already how Optimus got his chance between the pipes?

hell, he was the best ive seen a leaf goalie since Belfour's tenor...and only Eddy was +920 save % once as a leaf, once!!

Reimer and Bernier are very very similar in overall goaltending, regardless of puck control with rebounds, weak glove, fivehole, stick....whatever it may be.

Id say Reimer has proved more, he took the leafs to the playoffs for the first time in 10 years, and game 7 vs a great boston team. I was at those games, he was brilliant.

don't get me wrong though...Bernier is good, I just don't think Reimer is going out without a fight, and he just may win it.

It was a joke referencing a (piss poor) troll attempt by a Habs fan a week or so ago.

All I'm saying is that you all seem to be putting a lot of faith in a guy who played a few seasons in Tampa and then proceeded to take a lot of time off. He played AHL last season.
I wouldn't be putting him in the second pairing til you see what he has at the NHL level. It's a much faster game than what he has played for the last 3-4 years.

James Reimer 33 2.46 .924
Jonathan Bernier 14 1.88 .922

Funny how having these two very good young goalies with these great numbers is supposed to be a negative. Only in Toronto.

We need to trade one? No problem. There's no one under contract until they're 43 years old.

Sweet back pedalling. You called him a 'career AHLer' when the dude played 4 straight NHL seasons after his last in the AHL. He only played AHL last year to prove he could come back and play pro hockey now whatever personal issues are behind him. By most accounts he was the best D-man on a good Marlie team. I'm not etching him into the top 4 just yet, but it's not too much of a stretch, and would be a steal at 1mill for the season.

edit: he played but one AHL season before making the NHL and sticking. Wade Redden and Sheldon Souray are much closer to career AHLers.
