ya I don't love it, but it's a lower cap hit than he has now, and they need him.
EDIT: I'm not against trading him and going with a young defence, but missing playoffs this year would be a huge setback IMO.
Personally I don't see point in extending him now. Give it the year, see how everybody else does at all levels (D prospects) and how the season goes.
If it looks like 3 other Dmen can make the jump next year, 2 in top 4, then I'm fine letting Phaneuf walk.
or trading at deadline if they are not in playoff position. |

Bernier was 11th overall pick, Reimer was 99th, while some flop, generally higher picks pan out better than lower picks. Bernier has never been given the chance to play consistently so holding him to his NHL game experience will obviously handicap him to JR. Bernier also, in my opinion, has better reflexes and significantly better rebound control. What he lacks in height, he makes up in positioning. Most elite goalie prospect Toronto has had since they flushed Tukka down instead of Justin "Turd Ferguson" Pogge. |

So Trevor Kidd > Martin Brodeur? Chet Pickard>Jacob Markstrom? Seriously, please don't ever use where a goalie was drafted to prove a point. |

And Lundquist was chosen like 200th in his draft year. What's your point? |

Fine, i was being dramatic, he's a #4 d-man. The only time he was ever close to top pairing was on a non-playoff team. Actually, he hasn't seen the NHL playoffs his entire career, wow, he's the Matt Stajan of d-men! |

Ranger over Liles. Really? Career minor leaguer over a guy who had one bad season in TO?

Franson not top pairing either, but would "do" while we wait for Rielly-Percy-Blacker-Finn to develope |

ya, probably, Ranger's not a career minor leaguer...
Liles hasn't played a single strong game since the concussion. |

Realistically what type of production would you expect to see out of Hainsey? |

stay at home to counter Franson as the offensive guy. Hainsey's changed his game, he's not offensive anymore, but still could be.

re: Scuderi - copy and paste below
Michael Shuckers - The Stats Doctor says Scuderi’s underlying statistics say he wasn’t worth the four-year, $13.5 million price tag.
Just sayin...what's one opinion?
I don't think the Pens are thinking about 4 years down the road either. |

the minutes he played on 1 of the best defensive teams in the league the last 2 years disagrees with Stats Doctor...
