Then we have a somewhat expensive, but capable back-up for a while. Nonis will look a little silly if he can't recoup a decent package for Bernier, but a 3rd liner and a 2nd pick is not an overpayment for potential, in my opinion.

Bernier is a better goalie than James Reimer, flat out. He's had incredible numbers his whole career and has fewer injury question marks. I like Reimer, and he'll find a home as below average starter somewhere in the league... but JB will become a solid starter when given the opportunity this year as a Maple Leaf.

Losing Phaneuf would not make us drop that much in the standings, just as the Oilers attaining Phaneuf would not change their standing. I like the guy, but are the Leafs even interested in extending his contract, especially when he's asking for more than he's worth.
