Sorry that's what I meant. Poor poor kids coming out of university.
- Yeti1181

not to mention university is a joke in itself

spend thousands of dollars to be qualified for a 20K a year starting position.

its gotten to the point that whenever a kid asks me what would be a smart direction to take i immediately say "get a trade"

Bernier is a better goalie than James Reimer, flat out. He's had incredible numbers his whole career and has fewer injury question marks. I like Reimer, and he'll find a home as below average starter somewhere in the league... but JB will become a solid starter when given the opportunity this year as a Maple Leaf.
- PotvinFan

This. Bernier has been working day in day out with a conn smythe all star goalie. Reimer doesn't have that added knowledge and Bernier is hungry for that spot. Reimer has yet to play a substantial amount of games since jr. Reimers injury history will open the door for Bernier.

...depends what you wanna do though. Sure your degree isnt goign to get you into the doors anymore without added experience etc...so, guys like me who want to get into the government for analytical positions take on extra stuff like blogging, condo board president etc...though they seem unrelated, a hiring team will look at that as added experience and responsibilty on a resume with nothing but a fancy degree or two...

Myself, my bachelors, masters and soon to be PhD disagree!!!

Having said that, I feel like I'm in a trade anyway... we have to spend lots of time with our instruments, so just this morning I spent my time doing a spot of welding and refurbing some valves for our air-free gloveboxes... fun times!!!

I know someone who knows someone that works at a bank and they'll do search on you over the net to see what come up.
there are companies out there that do the internet scrubbing of your name. clean it up for potential employers.

Or just stand at the corner of Young and Bloor for 15 minutes. Makes them both seem no better than average...

oh sure there is oppurtunity

but the point I am making is if you were to go into something like brick laying.. you would make a killing.. they have to pay outrageous amounts to guys to stay out of retirement right now

Do you think it will reach that point that if you don't have FB/TW accounts, potential employers would view you as suspect, ie. 'what does he have to hide'?

Absolutely. The same time I started Uni, a friend of mine did 1 year at Fanshawe, then started his HVAC apprenticeship. He was making north of 100k by the time I graduated.

edit: this was at the very end of the OAC days, meaning I had to stay in high-school an extra year just so I could get accepted to Universities. The buddy's 1 year at Fanshawe was done by then, and he started his apprenticeship the same time as my 1st year of Uni.

While true, the mere fact that I have an education while trying to get into my career has lead me to other opportunities...had I gone into trade and there were no positions open at the time, what would my "masonry" diploma (or what ever you may get) do for me?

Ive had 3 promotions at my current job because of my education...and its all padding my resume further to get the job I want, which in/of itself pays very well

All subjective my friend...the point I think youre making is towards the kids who go in for a simple BA and expect a job out of the gates at 22/23...yeah, not going to happen.

I deleted all my pictures awhile ago because of this and made my account "private" but apparently the gov. jobs have ways around this anyways...so...when I reapply I think im deleting my account all together

yeah prolly already has

but if the applicant is forthright about it i think it could be handled

"btw, if you are searching for my FB account you wont find it, I keep my personal and professional lives separate, and if you are the type of company that feels that it deserves to be aware of my private life then I don't want to work for you anyways"

some employers will respect it, some wont.. c'est la vie
