if you read what I wrote, I would refuse to give kadri a long term deal right now. a bridge deal is fair. you need atleast 3 years of consistency before a long term. not sure why you mentioned cheechoo, him and kadri are completely different players

I think the reference was to the fact that Cheechoo was looking like a pretty damn good player and just never became anything and is in the AHL now and the same thing could happen to Kadri and that would be really bad if given a long term star type money thats what i got from it anyways

Yeah, I wasn't disagreeing with you at all. Just pointing out that 1 good (shortened) year after a few less-than-stellar stints (8 goals in 51 games before last season) does not make you worth a long-term, high-dollar contract. I'd say a Subban-esque bridge deal is more than fair.

Exactly, and the problem is teams are giving out ridiculous deals with both term and dollars to young players that have not proven they are worth it yet, almost like they are making the deal on hunches and hopes, expecting the player to continue progressing when we all know it does not happen even close to all the time.

A team can play hardball with a certain player in that situation, but it will likely only end up hurting that team in the long run as we all know another team will have no problem giving that player a bloated deal.

I like it when gms play hardball, you have to set precedents for the team. As bergevin did with subban.

Sits out the year and walks for nothing next year. Leafs already have no talent at center, can't let kadri go over a few dollars.

he can't walk for nothing, and he wont... it doesnt work that way... who knows where the negotiations are... if you believe the "report everything in the negative context" toronto media, you'd assume they are $3-5million apart, which is not a few dollars. but in reality they are likely within a million with both kadri and franson, but it probably puts them at or above the cap... so its a waiting game to save another million or so.
and the leafs would have no problem starting the year without kadri, it's not ideal, but its an option, and the results could go either way.

They should both accept bridge contracts and move on, earn your money then cash in. Claude Giroux did!

They need to give him a Duchene-esque (and probably what Hodgson will get) bridge contract. You Toronto fans are likely correct in thinking he will be successful, but it's not worth the risk to give him the star money some think he's worth.
